Amazon 7 #51 August 6, 2003 Way to go Bill,,,, Looking out for others is something more people should do. Sometimes the look-out-ees are not appreciative.. but the others around them that could be adversly affected... surely do. Hell I'd jump with ya again anytime.... Again.. Way to go. dropdeded 0 #52 August 6, 2003 Wow, what to say. Thank God you handled it. My only other thought is that I sincerely hope this chick either allready knows, or soon comes to realize the seriousness of what happened up there, and takes appropriate steps to deal with it. dropdeded------------------------------------------ The Dude Abides. -

mikkey 0 #54 August 6, 2003 A couple of thoughts: 1) Great job Billvon, especially impressed that you kept an eye on the altitude, ensuring that you won't end up a dead hero. 2) I am surprised she did not get grounded immediately until further assessment. 3) Cypres is a good thing! Here in Australia it is mandatory until E license (which is maybe a little harsh). But I think Cypres should be mandatory until you are reasonable experienced and there is less chance of a brain lock caused by nervousness/stress (I assume this was the case here)--------------------------------------------------------- When people look like ants - pull. skreamer 1 #62 August 6, 2003 Lucky for her she had a switched on AFF instructor on the dive. Did anybody get a chance to look at her log-book? Find out exactly how many jumps she had and what she had done (or not done!) on them? The fact that she was conscious but unable to maintain a stable body and pull (either handle) for herself is rather disturbing. Someone with about 100 jumps _should_ be able to safely attempt a 4-way (regardless of how many points are completed).

BBKid 0 #65 August 6, 2003 Bloody Nora! I know the primary reason most people give for having a Cypres is in case they're unconscious in freefall, but this is worse. I know I'm only a dumb student, but I've always thought that no matter how you arse up the dive, the only thing you worry about at pull time is pulling, regardless of position (though it's advisable to be stable on your belly). AndyMan 7 #67 August 6, 2003 Was she showing any other signs of heat exhaustion? I know you didn't get much chance to speak to her on the ground, but maybe Anita did? bwilling 0 #68 August 6, 2003 QuoteShe wasn't quite sure what had happened, and was asking things like "where's my main?" She assumed she had had a cutaway. Holy shit! First off, very heads up work Bill... Second, somebody please find that girl, and give her the bowling talk! Just out of curiosity, do you, as a load organizer at an event like WFFC, ask to see log books to verify the number of jumps that someone 'claims' to have? billvon 2,998 #69 August 6, 2003 >she needs someone at her home DZ to know what happened, and >give her a good stern talking-to that she'll listen, maybe with the >bowling lecture included. Yeah, that's why I've been trying to find out where her home DZ is, so I can give them a call. Rantoul's not a good place to do the kind of remedial training she needs anyway, and her original JM's/coaches should know how she's doing so they can talk to her/work with her. I have Anita and DJan looking for her today and tomorrow. (I have to take a few days off Rantoul to do real work.)

I don't know if the LO's do, but when I checked in and got my gear check, one of the things the gentleman checking me in did was verify the number of jumps in my log book, where I jumped and when my last jump was.Life is short! I have a friend who'd start acting rather goofy when this happened but knew well enough to sit down and take a break with lunch if that happened. billvon 2,998 #73 August 6, 2003 >Just out of curiosity, do you, as a load organizer at an event like >WFFC, ask to see log books to verify the number of jumps that >someone 'claims' to have? They do that at registration, so theoretically the jumpers we get have at least 50 jumps. On occasion the registration folks will get someone with 40 jumps or who is very uncurrent or something and they'll give us a heads-up. Once we know that we can make sure they get put on appropriate dives (2 ways etc.) If it's really bad, if they have 10 jumps or something and are absolutely determined to jump there, they get sent to the AFF tent. Usually at tent 4 we have a 'ground' organizer whose job it is to find out what people's experience level is, what their unique issues are (i.e. they're bowling balls or they can't float on the otter) and what they want to do. Generally that's DJan, and generally she just goes by what they say. 99% of the time that's not a problem since she's quite good at reading people.
