dropdeded 0 #1 July 26, 2003 So whats really goin on here. Read in the paper about people getting subpeona's for filesharing or whatever. Allready seeing commercials for " 79cents per song". Whats the chance that Kaazaa and the like are breathing their last breath. I guess what I REALLY want to know is, do I need to download like hell cause the plug will be pulled tomorrow? dropdeded------------------------------------------ The Dude Abides. -
Clownburner 0 #2 July 26, 2003 "downloading like hell" is a good way to get on the list of people getting those subpoenas...7CP#1 | BTR#2 | Payaso en fuego Rodriguez "I want hot chicks in my boobies!"- McBeth
freeflir29 0 #3 July 26, 2003 Who really knows. I have Kazaa...and use it every day to download more music. If the internet cops show up they'll never take me alive!!!!! spidermonky 0 #4 July 26, 2003 Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you could possibly get in any trouble for downloading music. Sharing a TON of files might get you on this supposed list. My thinking is that since these programs are peer to peer, the only way for someone to bust you for downloading is if they are sharing the files themselves. Wouldn't that be entrapment?? I think they have been getting subpoenas to force the ISP's to give up the info. The ISP can track you quite easily by your IP addy.
dropdeded 0 #6 July 26, 2003 I can see it now, Bubba say's " I killed my momma, what are you in for"? My response: "I uh, shared the soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever, doin 5-10 HARD time". If I download, burn, delete, thats kinda selfish but if it will keep me from doin Bubba's laundry dropdeded------------------------------------------ The Dude Abides. -

thethinker 0 #9 July 26, 2003 I've heard mirc is the safest spot for downloading but they can still get ya. Ya know i have kazaa so if ya need something tell me. The safest way to go around it is to not do it. But a friend told me to stop sharing files and that should help out a bit. Also move your file folder. Hey its better than nothing. base698 19 #10 July 26, 2003 Kazaa Lite ++ has blocking for the RIAA ip addresses (not exactly totally secure but it helps get me a small piece of mind). It also doesn't have any spam with it, so its a great alternative imho. The RIAA's main beef with this ought to be clear. Internet music exchange has the possibility to cut out the middle-man (the RIAA) entirely. Imagine a system where artists where to actually get paid for their work Here is a link: http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/07/15/1326240&mode=thread&tid=158&tid=

champu 1 #12 July 26, 2003 I'm not a lawyer/lawmaker so take what I have to say with a grain of salt. This is my basic understanding of it... As it stands right now, copyright violation is a civil matter. Meaning if someone has something copyrighted, and you copy it, they can sue you for damages. It's more of a breach of contract than it is crime/theft or any other scary words the RIAA likes to throw around. Their constant comparisons to shoplifting are laughable. What this means is that if you download a song from someone, you didn't steal it, you just copied it. This is a copyright violation by the person who had the music to begin with as it says clearly on the cd not to distribute it. While the RIAA could probably ask the courts to make the downloader remove the song from their computer, that's prolly as far as it would go. The real beef is with the person who made the song available, and these are the people that the RIAA is going after now. My advice is to try and stay low-profile. Grab a smaller program like winmx or soulseek instead of the big names like kazaa or whatnot. And for jebus sake don't leave your entire mp3 collection of like 10 jillion songs in your shared folder.
