Have you ever seen the Aurora?

Recommended Posts

Next question; has anyone heard them? During an intense display, they 'sing'.

We see them often during the winter, but only occasionally in full colour and never with any sound. The best shows are during solar max ever 7 years or so. You can even subscribe to an aurora e-alert so you don't miss the best shows.

Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.

First and only time I saw them was late at night in wisconsin, 60 miles south of duluth/superior. I was 11 or 12 and remember it like yesterday. It was like green fire was dancing across the sky. It lasted almost the whole night. Most awesome thing I ever saw. I would love to skydive at night with them in the back ground.....

What I'd like to know is if anyone has seen the U.S. spy plane named the Aurora.
We have had it for approx. 10 years, yet it's still a top secret project.
There once was a reference to it in the locker room scene at the beginning of the movie Broken Arrow with John Travolta and Christian Slater! Slater is closing his locker and there is a picture of a plane with the word Aurora in the back of the locker.
In addition it's on the defense budget given to congress each year.
It been reported to create a sonic boom pattern, unlike any plane (or shuttle) prior to it.
So has anyone seen it???? Or worked on it.
Sure I know the routine, "I could tell ya, but I'd have to kill ya"
just a simple yes or no would do?

When I was growing up in Vermont, I would see the "Northern lights" often during the Summer. The best time was after my parents and I had returned from an evening out, when we saw them in the sky as we reached the driveway to our house. We stopped and got out of the car only to look up and be surrounded by shards of light coming straight down at us from everywhere. It was really spectacular.

I know y'all are going to think this is bullshit, but one day in the mid 1980's they were seen in Sarasota Florida! It was pretty neat and kinda spooky and we weren't sure what it was, but the next day the newspapers confirmed that it was indeed the Aurora.

see it in the extremes of the planet

Having lived 2 years 500 miles North of the Artic Circle, thats not true. If you go too far North, the magnetic field of the Earth actually makes the NL very faint and small, you have to be RELATIVELY south for them (never though I'd say Gimli was South...;)).

The nicest one I've seen was from Downtown Edmonton.

Yes, saw it 2 weeks ago at the DZ. I just stood outside my tent and watched and watched. Started in the North, and eventually covered the whole sky.

I've seen it many times, each time it is different, but always awesome!

Edit to add:
If you go here http://www.bowfort.com/~adec/ you can sign up for a free service that will alert you to forecasted aurora.

:)Our club is located on a private airport
"out in the countryside" and so EVERY night that it is clear.. we get just a skyfull of Stars... I mean a "skyfull"...the darkness of the countryside helps..... the big dipper sits just to our North/northwest,, and the stars are brilliant....
We often see excellent aurora shows.... but last summer there was a night when it was just
"extreme" the flares and pulses were just amazing,, and many many members were looking up in Awe....we all agreed that we are a damn fortunate bunch to be able to skydive all day,, and then share a bonfire and great vibes, into the evening,, and then witness a light show which will last in our collective memories,,, forever....
talk about a bonding experience with your friends....
remember,,, the darker the area,, the greater the view.....
