Xenophobia

Recommended Posts

I'm really surprised, and I must admit somewhat shocked, at the amount of xenophobia in this forum. Not for the first time, I find I'm wondering whether I really want to look at the DZ.com forums!

Without dragging this particular thread into individual specifics, I am interested to know whether other people share this viewpoint, and if they think it is acceptable for the forums? If similar posts were made discriminating against people of a certain race then these would be be deleted - should we be asking greenies to remove xenophobic threads? Do the moderators have any thoughts on the issue?

Personally, I think DZ.com should be somewhere where every skydiver can come, regardless of nationality, and not be offended or discriminated against.

Hey Tom, I agree with you 100%. The problem is that a lot of people don't see it as xenophobia, or even if they do recognise it, they don't see it as being a huge problem.

There are some people who've tried to speak out against it, but they tend to get shouted down, or drawn into arguments about other topics (jokes about one nation turning into an argument about politics, and whether the complainant is unamerican or not, etc.).

In my opinion you can't stop this sort of thing happening over the internet, it's just too easy to anonymously stir up an argument. If it's people you know face to face it's obvously easier to connect with them.

I don't know about that, but I know that I really hate white people.

>:(:P

Ok, serious now.

I've seen it rarely, but that's from a single poster at the time, with others denouncing him/her due to their hateful comments. Its not something that's tolerated.

Main Entry: xe·no·pho·bia
Pronunciation: "ze-n&-'fO-bE-&, "zE-
Function: noun
Etymology: New Latin
Date: 1903
: fear and hatred of strangers or foreigners or of anything that is strange or foreign

I don't think what you are talking about qualifies as xenohobia. I believe it is specific to one country/culture. And, as I linked in a previous thread, this has a factual foundation, and is a backlash to an overzealous enthno/linguistic-centric attitude on the part of the "victims."

There is little or no true xenophobia here on dropzone.com. Yes there are xenophobic threads and some real hard feelings resulting from the "heat of the moment" type things, but in reality, most of these posts are really along the lines of sibling rivalry.

Skydivers tend to eat their young and have a lot of infighting but when the excrement impacts the rotational air movement device, we pull together in a manner that can take one's breath away. We are a large dysfunctional family; we have the odd eccentric aunt or uncle and we'll talk bad about her/him, but let someone outside of the family say what we say and they will learn something about solidarity.

In other words, chill out and don't try to read too much into anything, especially on the Talk Back forum. Here humor and exaggeration are simply devices used to take the piss on one another.

To summarize, fuck you if you can't take a joke!;)

Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, more money.

Why do they call it "Tourist Season" if we can't shoot them?

I'm so glad you posted that definition... b/c when I look at it, I have to conclude that I do not "suffer from" xenophobia. I neither hate NOR fear anyone or any nationality. It really irks me when someone accuses a person as being xenophobic just b/c they don't like a person or a race etc. Dislike is not = fear and hate. To me it's similar to the homosexuality debate. I don't agree w/ the homosexual lifestyle. But you know what? That doesn't make me homophobic, which is a label I hear FAR too often... I neither hate nor fear homosexuals. I've had an edifying chat w/ BlueEyedMonster and to me he is a genuine person who is very likeable and who happens to be gay. Big deal. That is such a cop out for people to attach those "phobia" labels instead of looking at real reasons for one person disliking another person or for disagreeing w/ another person. It is fallacious reasoning. (No, I didn't say fallatious!!! You pervert!)

I have to disagree with that - I have seen some fairly nasty stuff posted against one particular nation lately; this being what prompted me to start the thread at all. There is a big difference between a light-hearted poke at an individual and continually posting anti-a-certain-nation posts. Thats where I see the difference between taking the piss and xenophobia.

Humour is good, hatred is not...

christ-on-crutches, just come out and say FRANCE. The FRENCH. Yes, they are disliked by some people. But you know, the feelings is mutual for a lot of french people too, n'est-ce pas?

That's not turely Xenophobia, though, that's something that has come about from the political climate of late AND from general attitudes between people in BOTH countries since the 1950s.

For it to be Xenophobic, we'd have to say "we hate french people because their french people." When what's really going on is as a nation we're disgusted with their government and leadership.

*Sigh* I've been very careful not to be drawn into specifics. I really was hoping we could have a sensible discussion about this, find out the opinion of the board and make it a happier place for everyone. I really didn't want this to be dragged into a discussion onto France or not, since all this does is cloud the underlying issue of hate.

I've seen those sentiments posted today in Talk Back.

Yeah, no shit, its in YOUR thread.

How about next time you want to quote me, use the entire quote, instead of trying to pull little pieces out so you could try to prove your point. Especially since the point I was making is opposite YOUR opinion.

*sigh* too. I'm not falling into a conversation of why I dislike certain french people or their govt. etc. All I'm saying is that, for me and perhaps many others, this isn't an issue of Xenophobia. But still, you have a point and many of us have been insensitive to the feelings of others. At the same time however, I tend to take alot of stuff here w/ a grain of salt. communication on the web is very difficult to understand sometimes and I'd rather not take every post as seriously as it may sound. Now, I'm not always successful at doing this, but it is worth trying...
