CloudOnMyTongue 0 #26 July 6, 2003 Okay I'm not saying this to be a shit disturber... But I hear (I have no proof, I'm just supposing) that some skydivers commit sucide skydiving. Could this be a similar case? Maybe he sabotaged his rig to make it look like murder so his family could get the life insurance.

skydive84 0 #29 July 6, 2003 While it is obviously a possibility steve was acting completely normally before the jump, on the plane and on the dive. I dont think this was the case. I was back jumping today. Looking at a rig of the same make made me think just how quickly it could have been done. This is fuckin scary. Everyone be safe and look after each other. vt1977 0 #30 July 7, 2003 What can you say? The whole thing makes my blood run cold. The thought that another skydiver (and let’s face it, it has to be a skydiver) could do something that awful just makes me want to be sick. I guess until the police get to the bottom of it we’re all going to have to be extra careful – I for one will be purchasing a padlock for my rig bag today. It’s something that we shouldn’t have to do but it seems that there is a sick psycho out there. Whoever did this had better pray that the police find them before the skydivers do. Sincere condolences to Steve’s family and friends. I knew him to chat to and he was always a thoroughly nice, fun, friendly guy. Vicki
cptfunky 0 #31 July 7, 2003 Quote Whoever did this had better pray that the police find them before the skydivers do. absolutly right! I'm new in this sport but when i read the posts here, i have the impression that only very few people lock away their rig on the DZ when they don't use it. I can't understand this at all! Nobody's allowed to touch my rig, except me, my jumpmaster and and my rigger. And when it is not in use, it's locked in a storeroom or in my car. vt1977 0 #32 July 7, 2003 QuoteTRUST NO ONE It's very, very sad but at the moment I think we all have to be extra vigilant. I'm wondering what changes others are going to be making to what they do with their rigs between jumps? Personally I will be getting a padlock for my rig bag if I keep it in the packing hall between jumps and making sure it goes home with me EVERY evening. cptfunky 0 #34 July 7, 2003 of course this is very sad, but i'm sure you also experienced that you sometimes can't even trust your socalled "friends". So why take the risk and trust strangers? I'd also like to live in a world without paranoia but if this is not possible i'd like to survive at least.

BBKid 0 #36 July 7, 2003 Damn straight my friend! I'm not a violent person by nature, but if I caught this guy I would drive him straight to the police. Of course, he might have "fallen over" one or two times on the way. When I heard on Friday that someone had gone in at Hib I just thought about what a bad year this had been already for the sport, but this is something that just makes my blood boil. Add in the fact that Simon Ward was quite badly hurt in a collision on Sunday, and this just makes for a weekend I want to forget. My condolencies to the families and friends of all involved. Let's all learn from this and make sure it never happens again. Edit: There seems to be some confusion about how badly hurt Simon is, so I've edited the post until what I heard is confirmed or disproved. skreamer 1 #41 July 7, 2003 Same - while I've already had to learn the hard way that you can't trust all skydivers, if I didn't have total confidence in the rig on my back and where it was stored I'd quit as well.

Call me paranoid if you like, but until they catch the psycho who did this, I'm gonna be a whole lot more careful about where I leave my rig at the DZ during the day. It's not nice to have to lock your kit up, but then neither is the person who did this. Vicki
EricaH 0 #43 July 7, 2003 My thoughts & hope to his family. I don't trust anyone in the world in which I exist. However, in my skydiving world... where I LIVE... I do trust. It took time to learn trust, it is horrible that someone took advantage of the openness of the dz community. Just this weekend I was talking w/ a friend that had left some stuff lying around 1 whole week & it was right were she had left it. No where else can I think this would happen. About 99% of the people on my dz leave their rig out during a jumping day. Quite a few of us have it put away, but not locked up over night. I've been meaning to get a lock, but for insurance - not for threat of my life... this is horrible, horrible shocking news that gives me chills & makes my blood run cold. The only answer is sever scrutiny of gear prior to boarding the plane. And also having to question everyone you don't completely know that may show up @ the dz. I'm not sure if I'd want to survive/be in a world where paranoia is required. There is no can't. Only lack of knowledge or fear. Only you can fix your fear. CornishChris 5 #49 July 8, 2003 My condolences to family and friends. This made the front page of a major Aussie newspaper and people all over Britain (and the world) are talking about it. Let us hope, that it was a one off and that the perpetrator is caught quickly as we do not want to see a trend developing. Vigilante action, whilst rewading in the short term is probably not the best course of action however. We don't want to lose any more people to this tragedy... BSBD CJP Gods don't kill people.
