Grasshopper,

For clarification sake , you forgot to mention that the $400.00 dollars he is aksing for, is what his boss had to pay the property manager (he did not come across the canopy for free). His boss is not looking to gain anything out of this and was merely trying to get the canopy back to you.

Just b/c you have a grudge due to past experiences does not mean that you have to blasphemy his name here (especially since he is a third party that is invloved), or anywhere else. This is not a personal thing, and he was trying to be a nice guy.

Then his Boss is seeking to recoup his fee from the wrong person. Seeking to get money for stolen items is a crime in itself. Said boss should be pursuing the renter of the storage space for the fee. In light of this information the best recourse is to notify the police that said stolen property is in the hands of the boss and the police will recover the chute and return it to the owners PD if there are no other extenuating circumstances.

The rental occupants of a home were evicted. The property manager found the canopy (after the eviction) and took it to a master rigger, "the boss". The property manager sold it to the master rigger for $400.00.

After much research they came to the conclusion that it may be Grasshopper's cut-away. Thereby Grasshopper was approached.

The rigger should notify the property manager that it was stolen property, and the property manager should return the $400.

Selling stollen property is not cool.

Edited to add: Since the canopy belongs to PD and not Grasshopper, it's entirely up to them how to proceed. Grasshopper has already had the canopy replaced, right? Unless PD volunteers to cough up the $400 to the rigger, I think the rigger is out of luck...?

It's also quite illegal...

I'll check into some things about CA eviction law and RE law, and see if there isn't a determinant answer floating around somewhere in the vast resources at my office...

Well , now we have entered a moral dilemia. First off, the master rigger should of checked to see if the canopy was stolen seeing how it came from a non jumper and was a "recovered" item. Since I doubt the rigger can recover his money from the property manager he has to decide to either "do the right thing" or not to. Bottom line is that the master rigger is in possession of stolen property and I assume he is aware of it or soon to be aware of it, as grasshopper was notified. Grasshopper could notify the police and have them basically take the chute from the master rigger because it is technically stolen property, but I am sure that would be a bit of bad blood. The rigger needs to decide to either take the high road or take the easy road.

I suspect what will eventually happen is that PD will either buy the canopy from the rigger, or allow him to sell it - as they've invariably already written it off.

Hey Michele, Look up Civil Code 1980-1991, and 2080. All is within legal ramifications.

ciao for now, g

Hey G,

Traditionally, I've seen finders/recovery fees of $200 gladly paid to the finder. His price seems a bit high, but you and PD probably consider you as the new owner of this demo, right? If this is the case, you may be well served by having a $3000 canopy in your hands rather than just a memory of it.

If the way he 'found' it is true, then most likely you should pay some sort of finders fee/reward. Offer $200, as $400 is high, even for Cali.

Hi Gia...

Thanks for the codes...if I had remembered I was supposed to do something, then likely I would've looked them up. As it is, I forgot pretty much everything today.

Shall I start over tomorrow? Yes...if I remember to wake up....[:/] These damned meds...

(Edit: O.K., so because this is between some people, and some folks who I like are seemingly on differing sides; and because this is my dz; and due to a propensity to get myself into things without realizing it, I am going to back out of the conversation at this point. Kharma will do it's thing...it always does.)

If the serial number matches, it's still a stolen canopy. I would think the price of a Velocity would make it not only a theft, but a felony as well. The problem's not going to be solved until the canopy is returned. Maybe PD will agree to paying some or all of the money, maybe not. They might just want to cut the lines on the thing rather than be liable for letting another trusting sould use it. Who knows ? The chipos will fall where they will, but the rightful owners, PD, don't seem to have their property back yet. And the karma, which will always come thru doesn't just punish, it also rewards.

P.S. Track down the weasels who were keeping it in the locker. California's got a three strikes law, felony theft could be this guy's lucky number. Instead of stealing people's canopies, he could be happily married to Bubba up at San Quentin for keeps.

this is the best way i've heard this situation summed up so far. seems like poor choices were made...even if the parties involved had good intentions (i.e. the person that recognized the canopy/d-bag were really just trying to help, as opposed to that person actually just helping a friend make some money off of selling stolen property).

but it seems as though the rigger could have really kind of simplified this whole process by taking proper procedures in the first place (i.e. checking out the serial number).

now because he didn't, grasshopper and/or pd are stuck with trying to come up with a solution. i doubt any of them want to involve the police but it seems like that might be the only way to at least get some mediation about this issue.

there seems to be a lot of defensiveness bumping around the parties involved and hopefully this difficult situation will be remedied soon. i know it's hard when local jumpers are involved in a frustrating situation like this.

hey gia

i know this probably puts you in an odd position considering the parties involved. but hey, it seems like you might have a nice opportunity to help remedy the confusion...maybe?

do you, or the individual that offered the canopy to grasshopper, have contact with the rigger and the property manager? maybe if the property manager understood that it was stolen merchandise, he'd be willing to work out a deal with PD or something for less money. $400 goes back to the rigger, canopy goes back to PD and some "finder's fee" is awarded to the property manager.

i mean if the property manager is any kind of good guy at all, he'll understand that this is a funky situation and that maybe the road that had been taken wasn't the best and now there is an opportunity to fix it??

maybe it is just a matter of all of the parties being in contact with each other to reach a better decision than the one that was made origionally.

i know this is an odd situation for all parties involved, but maybe there is still an opportunity for the property manager and the rigger to end up doing the proverbial "right" thing.

maybe it is a naive idea...and also, i know a hard one for you to have to take on, considering the relationships involved, but i thought you might be a good person to get this kind of idea out there. and i know that you must want what is best for all parties involved.

anyway, i thought i'd throw that out there...hope it all works out.

Hi Laura,

I hope you are doing well!

As far as the canopy situation goes... the rigger is fully aware of the situation, and has been trying to get in touch with PD (getting messages that they are gone to Rantoul). The intent is to deal directly with PD.

I didn't post anything further about this, b/c I didn't want to have to keep drudging up all the nasty innuendos and comments. Not to mention, I don't feel that it's anyone elses business. The fact that everyone and their dogs have been dragged through this crap really isn't necessary.

To say the least... this has been a VERY akward and uneasy place for me to be. g

dude...i totally understand the pain of a position that you have ended up in.

i think it is great that the rigger is in touch with pd...and actually, i think it is a cool thing for the rest of the people curious about this post to hear. i know there was kind of a lot of negativity being thrown around and this seems like a positive step in the right direction. something that people might take example of in the future.

it's a hard line between who's business it is when it is posted in the forums. i mean, lots of people air interesting stuff in here seeking advice/help/anything. i thought you would be open to discussion because you had posted in here previously. i didn't know that it would frustrate you more. it wasn't my intent at all.

but i do think it is an important part of the story to share...being that the story had already been thrown out there. i'm sure a lot of people might have considered this a poopy lost cause and now, it seems as though there might be a positive outcome. so i'm glad that you replied. thanks for chiming in even though it's been such a pain for you.

yeah, I like to stay out of stuff like this, but I'm just curious if anyone knows the owner of the locker, where the canopy was originally found? That guy seems to be the first domino in this whole situation.... probably some whuffo that didn't know what it was, but liked the fabric or something... :S

I am not afraid to post his name. let's see if I get the canopy back first.

Fuck that! I'd be kicking that cock sucker repeatedly in the head and genitals until the canopy was in my hand. Rodney King wouldn't have shit on this guy! It's amazing what a motivator pain is......B|
