BobB 0 #1 July 16, 2003 Sorry if this is the wrong place, it's sort of skydiving related and sort of not...I don't think it belongs in GSD. I've been keeping my skydiving venture a secret from my family. I was in Raleigh today taking a test at the MEPS (thinking of going into the Air Force). During the test, when I needed to calm down a little, I found myself thinking about skydiving! I remembered the guitar and visuals from Doc's "48 Way at Eloy" video (see http://www.manifestmaster.com/video/) and I really calmed down. When I got home, I finally realized how much this sport has captivated me. After that experience, I finally called my dad tonight (I felt like I HAD to tell somebody). I figured he might as well know about it, considering that I'm even dreaming about it now. My dad has always been superbly receptive to everything I've wanted to do. He was really cool about my skydiving. I found myself lacking words to describe it. I told him that I wanted him to try a tandem jump at Raeford the next time he comes down to visit (told him I'd pay for it). I think he might actually do it!! I felt guilty about letting my secret out, but, like I told him, it's hard to keep something quiet that I want to share so badly. Sometimes I guess they do understand, or at least pretend to. Cheers... Bob Yes, I know it is snowing. No, we are not putting the top up.

That would be very cool. I've never convinced any of my family members to jump. Oh well, they don't know what they're missing. ___________________________________________ meow I get a Mike hug! BobB 0 #3 July 16, 2003 He sounded curious, which didn't surprise me much. I had to get the "curious spirit" (no, not Crown Royal) from somewhere...my bet is it's from him. My guess is he'll be in the tandem rig the next time he comes down here (which, if I pester him enough, will be soon!!). Yes, I know it is snowing. No, we are not putting the top up. feuergnom 29 #4 July 16, 2003 what i don't undestand - why didn't you tell your relatives in the first place? it's not illegal, you can't get sued for jumping, It doesn't harm other people and it's not offensive. if my kid did some kinda sport i lack the understandig for, i'd sit down and think about it or let him explain why he's doing it. even if it wasn't my cup of tea i'd still encourage him to do it, 'cause it's his life anyway - congrats that u found the guts and i think it's great that your dad want's to do a tandem (i wish i still had my dad so i could suggest the same thing to him) blue skies - feuergnomThe universal aptitude for ineptitude makes any human accomplishment an incredible miracle dudeist skydiver #
SkyAnt 0 #5 July 16, 2003 When I first took up the sport I made five jumps before telling my Dad. I was 18 at the time. It was late one night and he was a little tired and I said "I have to tell you something Dad. I didn't drive down the coast last Sunday, I actually went parachuting". "Parrot shooting?" He replied with a confused look. "No, P A R A CHUTING" I said. And then slightly relieved "Shit son, I know life is boring but why couldn't you take up golf?" True story. Mum took it pretty well. With all the build up I'm sure Dad thought I was about to tell him I just spudded the neighbors kid. He still thinks I'm mad though. Mmmm Its gonna be real interesting when I tell him I want to take up BASE. "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." BBKid 0 #11 July 16, 2003 I knew that if I told my parents when I was going on my FJC my Mum would be crying down the phone and trying to guilt trip me into not going. So I did the course, made the jump, then called them. My Dad thought it was cool (that I did it, not that he would want to), and my Mum was just relieved I was okay. I'm pretty sure if I had told them before I had gone to make my second jump I would have got the "you've done it once, why temp fate again?" speech, but now that it's just what I do at the weekends they're kinda fine with it. I think if my Dad was younger he would have thought about it, but my Mum refuses to ever watch me even putting a rig on. What she'll do if I ever do a local demo is beyond me! QTPi 0 #12 July 16, 2003 Congrats, man! I did the same thing! I just didn't want them to worry and I knew they would and do. I waited an entire year before I told my family! I popped in a video and they were saying, "Look at those people skydiving!" Then the camera came in close and my Dad said, "Holy Shit!! That's you!!!" It was great. I call them every Monday morning and they breathe a sigh of relief...
