Tipping

Recommended Posts

Where I work pizza and a couple of beers has went from $20 to $25 in the past 13 years.

15% of $20 is $3
15% of $25 is $3.75
20% of $20 is $4
20% of $25 is $5

So I make about a dollar more per table then I did 13 years ago, not much of increase if you ask me.

Tipping is getting ridiculous. And, those restaurants that automatically add 15% torque me. There is no motivation for excellence.

By the time you add tax & tip, you're up to ~25% of the bill for nothing tangible. So at a restaurant, My sliding scale is:

0% - you sucked.
5% - you did the minimum to get by.
10% - if you were a little more than average.
15% - You didn't ask me, "How is everything?" while I've got a mouth full of food and anticipated my needs (water - 1/4 full and you're filling it, just used the last pat of butter and you're bringing more, etc.)

Now, for those things that aren't taxed... Riggers, packers, etc. The scale goes up. I always tip the packers in advance while giving them the instructions of preference for my rig. If they follow it all day long, I tip them again at the end of the day.

"Tipping is getting ridiculous. And, those restaurants that automatically add 15% torque me. There is no motivation for excellence."

Most resturants that add gratuity only do it on groups of 8 or more and it's written on the menu. If your service was not up to par you are not required to pay it. By the way don't come to Washington DC if you don't like the 15%, resturants here add 18%.

"10% - if you were a little more than average."
I work in a family style resturant as a second job to pay for my skydives. Here's some of the extras.
- Cleaning up after a kid pucks because their parents let them eat to much.
- Sweeping up all the food their kids thru on the floor(cheerios they brought in).
-Parents that think we're a babysitting service and get angry when I can't tell them where their kids are.
- Cleaning up the non food trash people bring in(mail, news papers, wraping paper).

We do all this with a smile and say "that's way you came out to eat, so you don't have to clean up."

The attitude we have to deal with is always fun.

-People ordering stuff they've never tried and then don't want to pay for it since they didn't like it.
- I love the customers that say I'm in a hurry and need to be taken care of first.
-Getting yelled at and told your just a waitress you can't cut me off.

So if your only going to tip 10% for just over average service and I might get lucky and get 15% get carryout or delivery.

Starting to rant sorry. I have to remember this job pays for my jumps.

Well, that's their responsibility to tip for, not mine. I really don't care what other folks do, I'm a good customer (always say, please, thank you, when you get some time...)

But I only feel required to tip based on how your service affects me, not cause you're having a bad day cause someone else's kid puked.

I tend not to use a % basis. If you suck you will recive $.01 just so you know that I did not forget. If it is great service their is no top. It is all about how much I thought your time was worth. If you are having a bad day I am sorry for that but if you let it affect your service to me and make me have a bad day your day will get worse. If you want my money show me that you care and are willing to take the time to earn it. If you expect me to pay a tip you probly wont get a great one.

im poor, but I like to tip as I have worked jobs that I've had to rely on tips. It sucks when people fuck you over, working for little/no money is a horrible feeling.

I heard a story one time about a pizza delivery guy that took a bunch of pizzas to a big party and recieved zero tip. The next time that delivery guy delivered pizza to that same address, he took the time to pee a little on one of the pizzas. Since I heard that, I tip pizza delivery guys WELL!!!

I worked for a pizza delivery joint in high school. We generally got a bit obnoxious anytime someone ordered a pizza after we'd already cleaned everything up. This was generally in the form of oiling the pan with mineral oil, or chopping their pizza into about 70 bite-sized pieces. However the one that took the cake came in at about 1:35 one morning (we closed at 2:00), from the house of the recently ex girlfriend of one of our drivers, and he happened to be there that night. Since she'd left him for another guy, and he figured she must have company to be ordering this late, here was his chance for a little revenge. We made the pizza, and in between the prep table and the oven, it got side-tracked into the bathroom where he jerked off on it. When it came out of the oven, he delivered it, and sure enough, the new boyfriend answered the door and payed him for the pie. I NEVER order pizza after 12:00.

Valets get $1-3. Hotel maids get up to $20 at the end of the stay. For meals, I usually tip around 20%, including drinks, and round up. 10-15% for bad service. I hardly ever leave less than a $1-2 unless its dumping change at the Starbucks counter, but I have left $0.01-0.25 when someone really, really pissed me off (more than just bad service) and then only to say I didn't forget to tip you.

Tipping is -- like someone else said -- outta control! I'll tip 15% for a good meal, 10% for an average meal, and less for poor service, lousy food, etc. If a child was delivering my newspaper, I'd tip the kid at Christmas. The rare time I've been in a taxi, I've left after giving the driver a small tip.

Food delivery people (pizza, Chinese, etc) get a small tip if the meal is delivered hot in a timely fashion.
