Have you guys read the TSA nightmare in July's parachutist??

Well said. A rigger's seal and FAR 105.43 should be enough for the TSA :ph34r:s.

Thanks. That also brings up the fact that it's illegal to carry a rig on board if the reserve is out of date. Most people don't know that, including most pilots and anybody at TSA.
FAR 91.307

It's also illegal to carry a BASE rig in an aircraft, although you can check it.

you all need to settle down...i have flown over 30 times, on different airlines, wearing my rig on my back...been questioned a few times...i just ask for a supervisor. i have a copy of the article stating that the cypress is not dangerous, the litte card it comes with showing the xray, and a calm voice. never a problem. just put you attituded aside, and explain technically that it is a sporting parachute rig. never, ever would i check it though...thats like checking your life. i find that most people that have problems, bring it on themselvs.

Yeah, they steal too. I was listening to NPR this morning (lefty pinko that I am...) and heard the "David Nelson" story. Apparently if your name is David Nelson, you get pulled out of line and hauled off to the strip search room, because Al Qaeda (or his brother Bill) are supposedly using David Nelson as a travelling alias. Not any more I'm sure, the terrorists out there may have heard by now that David Nelson is no longer a cool name to travel under. Makes you feel a whole lot safer doesn't it ?

These stories remind me of the old Soviet Union horror stories they used to drum into us in school. They're the same kind of outrages, perpetrated by the same kind of stupid government hacks. Security has nothing to do with it and is not enhanced. They just like to fuck with people.

Besides, everyone knows skydivers are a bunch of weirdos anyway, right ? That what they think.

did you get a reply?

I did, but don't have it available.

The nutshell was that it is an issue that they are aware of, and are developing a policy. They gave no indication of what that policy would be. This means that right now is the critical time to make our issues known.

Contact your reps and the TSA. You will get a response, and your reps will listen to you. We can not afford to leave this one up to the USPA.

Well, not exactly:

No pilot of a civil aircraft may allow a parachute that is available for emergency use to be carried in that aircraft unless it is an approved type and...

A checked rig is not available for emergency use. It would be nice to get those fuckers sent in for tampering with reserves, though, wouldn't it?

in my recent experience, the screening device is right near checkin and they make you take your bags to it. The guy says you can go to your gate but I wait around until my rig goes through. If they look at all confused, i am right there explaining.. It's worked so far and I don't think there is any additional screening going on after that x-ray.

Same here. Domestic and international. All over Europe and all over the US and Canada. I had some (pre-TSA) twit at OHare tell me it was against FARs to carry a parachute on board an aircraft. When I pointed out that I had just flown from San Jose (California) and was connecting, she said "Well that's San Jose, this is Chicago". I wish I had a map of the USA handy. That was probably the worst problem I've had, but I know people firsthand who have had problems both checked and carryon. I've only checked it once, and that was because the gang I was travelling with insisted that we check the so we wouldn't get hassled in security. Personally I think it's less hassle to carry, so at least you can answer questions.

I'll be flying with rig on Wednesday. I'll let y'all know how it goes.

That depends on the airport. The TSA web page lists a couple different airport scenarios. Read under "No Change". SFO certainly seems to always do it the way you said.

I just read that and I'm really upset. Before the TSA I purchased a special case to put my rig in just for travel. Now that the TSA has the authority to open your items without your knowledge what happens to other stuff that looks unusual. I have read some replies to this thread and there are some good ideas. I like the one about having a photo copy of a TSA memo in your bags explaining a policy. I also think that taking rigs on as carry on luggage that you can control is a better factor than letting the uneducated mess with your equipment.

We need to contact our representatives and get them fired up about the problem. The USPA needs to take the lead on this. We pay them to represent our interests to government. Get on it USPA!
