wildblue 7 #3 October 28, 2002 ... and don't rent Mothman Prophecies... that sucks pretty bad too.it's like incest - you're substituting convenience for quality
lewmonst 0 #4 October 28, 2002 bad cinematography bad story line the only humor in it was the movie was SOO bad, you had to laugh sometimes bad Adam Sandler - acting like an idiot as in all his movies, but this time he's not the kind of idiot you laugh with, he's a real idiot, like an iq of 12, who smashes things for no reason, has no life and needs serious psychiatric help, instead he buys pudding. i don't know how the hell it got 4 stars.. there was some pretty colors and loud noises, maybe if you were on acid you might like the constant noise and annoying idiosynchrocies. diver123 0 #6 October 28, 2002 It wasn't bad... You just have to put yourself into Adam's characters' persepective to really appreciate it... Even if you find yourself confusing, there were still some pretty funny parts... "pull high! It's lower than you think..."
scottbre 0 #7 October 28, 2002 I saw it this afternoon. It was good, but in an odd way. It was done by the same director/writer of Boogie Nights and Magnolia, and it helps a lot if you go into the experience knowing that. It maintains that slightly surreal feeling that Paul Thomas Anderson's (the director) other movies had. You spend the whole movie sort of cringing for what is happening to the protagonist because he not completely stable and is socially out of touch. The sound volume of the movie could have been a little more balanced, and it definately has more of an independent movie vibe that the director's previous movies, but Adam Sandler showed a whole lot more acting range in this movie than Billy Madison, The Waterboy, Little Nicky, etc. It was not, however, the kind of movie that caters to mainstream tastes, so there are going to be people who don't like it. So if you are the type of person who thought MIB, Red Dragon, and any number of other big budget movies that are super-hyped before they come out are the best thing since sliced bread, spend your 8 bucks on something faster and flashier, like oh say, The Transporter. And just to poke fun at you a little lew, if someone had and IQ of 12, they wouldn't even be able to walk. "Your mother's full of stupidjuice!" lewmonst 0 #8 October 28, 2002 ah, but i liked magnolia... the strangeness of this just didn't add up. I do agree with you that it gave Sandler an opportunity to play a bit of a different role, which was nice to see. but the reviews gave it 4 stars, more than any other movie out there, and stated: " Finally, a movie that gets to the heart of Adam Sandler's appeal. This way-offbeat and thoroughly original romantic comedy lights up with wit and compassion." I like to think of myself as somewhat intelligent, i mean, i have an iq of 13 or 14 , but i truly feel it came up short in the "lights up with wit"... i don't buy the hype, but i usually give some credit to printed reviews... to each his own. Cajones 0 #9 October 28, 2002 I agree. It sucked a$$. The almost random camera angles and movements, the odd lighting and perspectives. Looked like it was edited by four people and spliced together by a fifth. Adam Sandler did a respectable job of portraying a moron with some very deep issues. More if an indy feel, with 70's style quasi-kaleiescope transitions and very few points to consider comical, few points to consider dramatic, and barely one scene that could be classed as action. Let's call it an hour-and-a-half you could get equal entertainment from spent at the coin laundry. The laws of physics are strictly enforced.

brits17 0 #11 October 28, 2002 hehehe, i saw it this afternoon too... we were walking out of the theater going "that was... interesting, different..." i personally didn't like it, we concluded you had to be drunk or on drugs to understand it or even laugh at it. i noticed subliminal things all throughout the movie (blue lines, atlas moving truck (and boxes)... but i was pretty lost. i was expecting the typical laugh your ass off adam sandler, i'll just say it wasn't his usual movie _______________________ aerialkinetics.com
Scoby 0 #12 October 28, 2002 I went to Punch Drunk Love with a bunch of directors, film students, and assorted cinema afficianados. We all loved Hard Eight, Boogie Nights (a movie that I didn't fully appreciate until my career in the porn business and drug experiences), and Magnolia. We were expecting a lot from this movie, and were mostly left cold. I certainly didn't think the film was horrible, but it defintely was let down. I didn't, however, think Adam Sandler was horrible, though his character certainly was. I think he may have a future in dramatic roles.
FliegendeWolf 0 #13 July 1, 2003 I hate to resurrect an old thread like this, but we rented it the other night and I want to add my own $.02. Are you ready? : What the fuck? DJL 235 #14 July 1, 2003 You can't go into this with the same attitude you have going into Billy Madison or some kind of slapstick like that. It's dry and deliberate humor. It's the kind of movie that you see and then two days later you think to yourself, "I would go nuts if I had to grow up with 10 sisters like that.""I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
marcandalysse 0 #15 July 1, 2003 We rented the DVD a couple of days ago. I like the director alot and the cast was good, but yeah, the movie sucked. Alysse got really irritated by it, the music, the character Sandler played, etc....and she has a high tolerance for 'art movies'... I heard so much about it, so I was looking forward to seeing it....I think the critics were good to it because Sandler managed to act a bit... Want to see a very sexy, yet strange and somewhat confusing movie, see 'SEX AND LUCIA'....Make sure you rent the UNRATED version, not the edited R version at Blockbuster... Cava 0 #16 July 1, 2003 I agree. Upon hearing all the stellar reviews I went and saw it. Then I knew why it was so popular: It sucked. Quirky characters and random, meaningless set pieces don't equal depth or brilliance. And not one principal character in this movie behaved like a real human being. They were rough sketches of characters with no real motives. Just cartoon ones. From seeing this movie and his others, I would suggest that the director throws a bunch of shit in the air and hopes it lands in such a way that makes him look like a profound, impenetrable genius. Tonto 1 #20 July 3, 2003 Well... (takes a deep breath...) I liked it. I liked that a moron could think of something that no one else would (free air miles) and act on that - and I liked that simple people can make mistakes, be taken advantage of, fall in love, have issues - and still be OK. So I'm a moron with issues - but I take my pleasures where I find them, and that's ok. tIt's the year of the Pig.
