VanillaSkyGirl 6 #1 June 27, 2003 Tomorrow morning, I am going to be on a commercial plane for a long flight down to South America! I am going to Peru, where I was born, and I am going to visit the Amazons for the first time, too. Anyhoo, this will be the first time that I am on a plane and NOT jumping, since I first began to skydive. I was wondering if any of you remember what it was like to be on a plane and to not be able to jump for the first time after no longer being a whuffo. Does anyone care to share his/her thoughts/feelings about it? P.S. I will miss you all... Edited to add: There are NO dropzones in Peru ...I checked! skybeergodd 0 #2 June 27, 2003 I felt like I was missing something the entire time.(my rig...which was in my bag in the overhead compartment) and I had this urge to do a handle check about 7 or 8 minutes after take off and the lady next to me probly thought i was nuts when I asked her to give me a pin check ....just joking....it was no big deal...Those commercial jets and jump aircraft have very little in common. Gawain 0 #4 June 27, 2003 Have a safe trip! I fly commercial all the time. I like to guess when we reach 10,000ft just before the cabin-tone sounds. Other than that...I generally sleep. So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! Clownburner 0 #5 June 27, 2003 I did find myself looking out the window, trying to find outs and estimating altitude a fair bit. ;-) I bet peru has no dropzones because they're so high up - the MSL altitude would be wicked. Isn't Quito at like 8,000 feet?7CP#1 | BTR#2 | Payaso en fuego Rodriguez "I want hot chicks in my boobies!"- McBeth

Push 0 #9 June 27, 2003 Yeah, it sucked The 37,000' cruising altitude was cool. The lack of a rig was not. I felt the usual flyer fear, like I had no control over the situation, but it was amplified. Overall, it's not really a big deal. Skydiving teaches you to be cool in a stressful situation, so just apply it! Have fun! -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. All you have to do is relax while plummetting at 120 mph from 10,000' with nothing but some nylon and webbing to save you.
VanillaSkyGirl 6 #10 June 27, 2003 Oooops...I lost my DSL connection for a little while. Quito IS in Ecuador. However, Cusco and Arequipa are both in Peru, and they are at VERY high altitudes! I am flying into Lima, then flying to Trujillo (north) the same night that I arrive to visit relatives. Then, I will be flying back to Lima for another day to visit relatives there, and then I'll fly to Iquitos to play in the Amazon jungle!!! WooHoo~ I also was offered a new freelance job today for when I return. If it works out, I MAY be moving to San Diego to work there full-time. However, I am NOT getting my hopes up because my industry can be insane. Btw, this new job will require me to fly to Bali 5 times a year...a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do! Edited to add: Steve, I am actually eating a carrot right now...NOT!
2fat2fly 0 #11 June 27, 2003 I got nervous when the plane stopped climbing. I finally decided it was because I felt like I should be doing something instead of just sitting there.
vt1977 0 #12 June 27, 2003 I did hear a very funny story once - how true it is I have no idea. This guy was doing his first flight as a skydiver, was taking his rig on as hand luggage and wearing it (this was obviously pre 9/11 and all the extra security). He walked to his seat, past a very nervous looking old lady, who stared at him with a shocked expression on her face. He turned to her, patted his rig and said nonchalantly, “Didn’t they give you one?” Vicki

VanillaSkyGirl 6 #14 June 27, 2003 I also fly commercial more than the average person, but this is the first time on a plane since I have begun to jump out of them. My older brother laughed and told me to fight the urge. I told him that I have no urge without a rig on my back!
cptnstratn 0 #15 June 27, 2003 Hey take the rig anyway, and ask to sit by the emergency door! You might even be able to bribe a local pilot to take you up and let you out. Enjoy the vacation! Amazon sounds incredible, you're a lucky girl! Blue skies, Steve
VanillaSkyGirl 6 #16 June 27, 2003 I don't have a full rig, yet. I am missing a main. I am going to have to buy a new one. No one seems to want to part with their Spectre 150...
oldnewbie 0 #17 June 28, 2003 My biggest problem flying commercial now is I keep looking at my altimeter (which i don't have on) After about 10 minutes,(time to get ready on an otter ride) i start getting nervous, keep looking at the altimeter that isn't there, thinking, ok, were almost to 13,500, its time to do my last gear check. Then i realize, i'm going to be in this tiny seat for 5 hours, time to go to sleep!!
