AggieDave 6 #12 June 25, 2003 Ok, funny story... A bit over a year ago I spent a week hiking Big Bend National Park. Well, every evening I would go down to the Rio Grand and swim/soak in the hot springs there at the old bath house. Well, one evening I swam across to Mexico, then swam back, I stood up on the shore and said "I'm illegal!" I don't think the people hanging around the Hot Springs thought it was as funny as I did, though.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." aero04 0 #13 June 25, 2003 Man Dave, a question I've pondered for awhile. Next time I'm at the DZ we'll have to talk about it. My opinion, as said in the movie "Contact", Space is a big place, and if we are alone, it would be an awful waste of space. I'm not, umm, "convinced" on the biblical explanation of origins of life, so I believe if life developed here, a rather insignificant ball of rock, and this life has thrived, this universe could be absolutely filled with life of all kinds. Have they visited? I must differ with ya Dave. Here's why. Switch places with the aliens. If your traveling along in space and see a civilization (us) and you see they are in their technological infancy, wouldn't you be interested to see what will happen? Will they smarten up and live through this infancy? Destroy themselves? More than likely, their civilization lived through this same infancy and lived, so would you want to watch another civilization and see what happens there? Here on this planet we study different forms of life to learn about them. They are obviously not as technologically advanced as we are, but we are still interested in them. I imagine aliens would have the same interest is us. So yep, I believe they exist and they've been here.

aero04 0 #16 June 25, 2003 QuoteVery interesting, but how can you be sure that aliens are more advanced then we are? Well seems to me if they can fly through interstellar space and possibly visit other worlds and all we can do is a hop a quarter million miles to our moon, I'd say they are quite a bit more advanced than us. juanesky 0 #17 June 25, 2003 Well, I personally think that they have the means to make it here and talk to us, yet, they have watched us for too long and figured out we are as nuts as it gets....... Just imagine if they really are advanced, we probably look like neanderthals to them....or may a little more advanced Cromagnon?"According to some of the conservatives here, it sounds like it's fine to beat your wide - as long as she had it coming." -Billvon

billvon 3,070 #21 June 25, 2003 There is almost certainly other life out there. However, we have some rather funny ideas about what sort of life we will find when we start looking. Popular culture tells us that the aliens will be: -intelligent -self aware -interested in talking to us -interested in trying to deal with us -into space travel -have about our values This comes, of course, from popular culture, science fiction movies in which aliens look like us except they have funny noses. Think about dolphins. We can't even decide if they have a true language or not, or if they're intelligent! And they are our blood brothers compared to anything alien we will find. Consider that we have reasonable evidence that there is microbial life on Mars, and not only can we not come to a consensus on that, we aren't even pushing to go there and find out. And, of course, we can't even understand different human cultures without friction now. I don't think we have a prayer of understanding any advanced life if and when we come across it. I hope we do come across that life, because we'll learn a lot about ourselves in the attempt to understand what we've found.
