Strom Thurmond - Democrat
Trent Lott was the Republican who was attacked for paying Thurmond a compliment on his 100th bday. He has never been associated with the KKK.
Jesse Helms has never been associated with the KKK. He is famous for Helms Law and is loved for that in Miami (Helms law says that we won't deal with Cuba because they are oppressing the public).
Check your facts.

Texas elected its first Republican statewide official since the Reconstruction in 1972. I don't think that means there were no conservatives in Texas prior to that.
In the 1970's people began to see that, and to accept that the ideology of the party, and not that it was associated with events that had happened a hundred years before. Phil Gramm used to be a Democrat, as did John Connally. That they were Democrats doesn't mean they were racists, either. It means they actually began to examine the ideology of the parties and to think about it objectively. Again, that's a good thing, this consider-the-actual-evidence approach.
Sometimes you have to check more facts.

Howzabout it? We could start with Richard Nixon, the fact that his daughter married an Eisenhower, add to it the race against Helen Gahagen Douglas in the 50's, the race for governor of his son-in-law -- there's plenty in there. Throw in a little complete bullshit (e.g. the German connection with Henry Kissinger, a German non-citizen, in a cabinet position that put him in the Presidential succession). It could be a whole lot of fun.

QuoteWendy, just add a link to Hollywood, and you have a winner!
Well, remember, the democrats own Hollywood. Even Reagan was a democrat when he was an actor! But we could probably figure in some major crime family or Vegas connection.

Quote>"I am a Republican!"
And proudly you say that! You are in good standing. Nixon showed the world how the republican party stood for integrity and honesty. Poindexter showed how honest republicans can be. Reagan showed real vision by funding radical islamic terrorists in Afganistan and helping pay for the rise of Al Qaeda, and Bush I proved how tough he was on terror by helping Hussein wage war on his neighbors.
Yep, consider yourself lucky that you are in the company of such outstanding people.
Ah, Bill, you're on a tear.
And scientists, along with all the good they do, also are responsible for the discoveries that have made life hell for others.
Tearing a group or race down for the actions of a few would eliminate the ability to affiliate with any group whatsoever. "A member of the Human Race!" "Bah!" "You know what they are responsible for?"
Same for any political party, plumbers, bakers, and housewives, too.
I was told by a veteran skydiver that The northern california "freeway rapist" was a skydiver. How the heck does that connect to me? About as tenuously as the actions of any President.
QuoteDavid Duke - Democrat
NOT
David Duke was elected in 1989 and served as a member of the House of Representatives and was a full participating member of the Republican Legislative Delegation.
QuoteStrom Thurmond - Democrat
Thurmond switched from the Democratic to the Republican party in 1964.
Trent Lott:
Senator Lott has had close ties to the Conservative Citizen's Council, an openly racist and anti-Semitic group which grew out of the terrorist White Citizen's Councils, and which today calls interracial marriage "white genocide." In 1992, Lott was keynote speaker at the group's national board meeting, ending his speech by saying "the people in this room stand for the right principles and the right philosophy." In 1995, Lott addressed the Carrol County (Miss.) chapter of the CCC, and in 1997, Lott hosted a private meeting with CCC leaders. Despite these close associations, when confronted with his membership in the group in 1998, Lott claimed he had "no firsthand knowledge" of the CCC. CCC officials responded by saying he was a "friend" and "paid-up member."
In 1984, Lott addressed the Convention of the Sons of Confederate Veterans in Biloxi, Mississippi by saying "the spirit of Jefferson Davis lives in the 1984 Republican Platform." The statement was covered in the Winter 1984 issue of the right-wing Southern Partisan magazine, in which Lott also explained that he opposes civil rights legislation, and said that the Martin Luther King Jr. national holiday is "basically wrong." In the 1970s, Lott led a campaign to have the citizenship of Jefferson Davis, the President of the Confederate States of America, retroactively restored.
Just because you're not a card carrying member of the KKK doesn't mean you're not a racist.
A year before the 1984 election, when public polls showed Helms trailing by 20 points, he launched a Senate filibuster against the bill making the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. a national holiday.
1953 -- Helms returns to Raleigh to become executive director of the N.C. Bankers Association. He begins writing a conservative column in The Tarheel Banker, speaking against public school desegregation
1999 -- Helms is one of only two senators voting against the confirmation of Carol Moseley-Braun, the only black woman ever elected to the U.S. Senate, to be the U.S. ambassador to New Zealand.
I think your facts need checking.

1988 Duke made a bid for the Presidency as a Democratic candidate first, then, a third party candidate sponsored by the Populist Party, an independent third party that serves as a vehicle for right-wing and extremist candidates. During the Spring of 1988 Duke broadcast his first “infomercial” which marked the beginning of his new emphasis on television advertising. As in past electoral campaigns, Duke temporarily dropped his openly racist and anti-Semitic views in exchange for mainstream issues of affirmative action, welfare, and immigration. On the ballot in 11 states, Duke received 47,047 votes and makes a particularly strong showing in Louisiana which inspired him to make a serious bid for state office.
1989 Duke won a seat in the Louisiana State House of Representatives. Running against seven Republicans in Metairie, Louisiana, Duke won by a narrow margin.
1989 Duke’s critics exposed him for selling neo-Nazi literature from his legislative office. This issue came back to haunt Duke in the coming years.
1990 Duke ran for U.S. Senate against Democratic incumbent J. Bennett Johnston using coded “Dukespeak” on racial issues. Duke was denounced by eight Republican Senators who endorsed Johnston. Duke lost the election to Johnston, winning 43.5% to Johnston’s 53.9%, but receiving 60% of the white vote in this election.
Duke is a Democrat that is the fact. He might have tried on occasion to run as a Republican but as you see he was denounced.
1953 -- Helms returns to Raleigh to become executive director of the N.C. Bankers Association. He begins writing a conservative column in The Tarheel Banker, speaking against public school desegregation
1953, Is that about the time when Al Gore's father voted against every single civil rights bill presented to congress.
1999 -- Helms is one of only two senators voting against the confirmation of Carol Moseley-Braun, the only black woman ever elected to the U.S. Senate, to be the U.S. ambassador to New Zealand.
Have you considered for a second that maybe he did not think she was the most qualified for the job. Or should he simply have voted for her because she was black.
Thurmond switched from the Democratic to the Republican party in 1964.
Switching to the Republican party in 64 does not change the fact that his extreme racist views previously could only have found a home in the Democratic party, which is where he was when he was outspoken about them.

so republicans want to pollute the environment. Obviously not that is just D propanda. Or do you really believe I want to breathe disgusting air like the people of Houston.
And this is why Bush pulled out of the Kyoto protocol? Why one of his biggest goals is the exploitation of the arctic national wildlife preserve? Why his answer to forest fires was to exempt forest management from the national environmental policy act (thereby eliminating the environmental impact analysis and public comment opportunities, among others). It's pretty clear that when environmental goals and industrial goals oppose each other, the republican party stance will side with industry.

Yeah, and Bill Clinton was a christian. One pro-choice republican doesn't mean they all are, and one scandal-ridden president doesn't mean all christians are adulterers. Republicans depend on the religious right at the voting booths, and thus cater to them on this prominent issue.

Lincoln was a Republican and if you look you will find that all the people in congress who were associated with the KKK are Democrats. Apparently because the want to play the race card all the time they they have managed to fool many like yourself.
From www.davidduke.com "Welcome to the David Duke Report Online!
I am currently an elected official of the Republican Party in Louisiana, serving as chairman of Republican Parish Executive Committee in the largest Republican Parish (county) in Louisiana. But, of course, my Republican position is not why the liberal media focuses a lot of hostile attention on me. That occurs because I dare to speak the unvarnished truth about race..."
Granted Strom Thurmond was a Democrat when he first became known as a segregationist, but he ran for president as a member of the "state's rights" party in opposition to Truman, as defiance against Truman's demand that Democrats get with civil rights program. Thurmond was a democrat for 10 years of his senatorial career. He was a republican for the other 39 or so years.
Don't get me wrong, the democrat's have had their share of racists (and still do if you include sharpton, jesse jackson, etc), but in overall consideration of civil rights, the dem's have clearly gained the upper hand.
QuoteI am totally opposed to any mixing of government and religion.

Republicans are the Champions of the constitution, this country was founded mainly on freedom of religion or lack thereof. So we may have a helpful lobby by the Christian coalition but I would not find it accurate in the slightest to suggest we want to make everybody Christian.
I didn't suggest that republican's want to make everyone christian. I simply stated that I don't want my government and my society's religions to mix. The "Faith-Based" stuff that Bush has been up to is one example of a mixture I oppose.

Robert Sherman (American Atheist Press):
"What will you do to win the votes of Americans who are atheists?"
George Bush:
"I guess I'm pretty weak in the atheist community. Faith in God is important to me."
RS:
"Surely you recognize the equal citizenship and patriotism of Americans who are atheists?"
GB:
"No, I don't know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God."
RS:
"Do you support as a sound constitutional principle the separation of state and church?"
GB:
"Yes, I support the separation of church and state. I'm just not very high on atheists."
There ought to be limits to freedom.

From the House Republican Congress Issue Brief:
Beyond rhetoric, however, several steps were taken to improve the drug abuse
problem in the United States. For example, in 1986, Congress passed the Anti-Drug
Abuse Act, effectively establishing the first federal framework of mandatory minimum
sentences for drug trafficking.
The law created a mandatory prison term for drug traffickers, which are triggered
exclusively by the quantity and type of drug involved in the offense. In 1988, Congress
amended the Anti-Drug Abuse Act ( P.L. 100-690) by establishing the Office of National
Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) and creating the new position of “White House Drug
Czar,” or Director of ONDCP. The Drug Czar responsible for presenting an annual
strategy with measurable goals and a federal drug control budget to both the president
and Congress. Furthermore, the Drug Czar’s responsibilities were extended in 1994 by
the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act ( P.L. 103-322). The law authorizes
the Drug Czar to make recommendations to agencies during budget formulation in
order to improve resources targeting and policy consistency at federal agencies
involved in implementation.
