Deuce 1 #1 June 16, 2003 After the biggest skydive for me yet, a formation load out of two Otters, a nice one-point 35 way that should have made the second point, with me front float on the trail plane, I tracked away at 5000 feet to 3500, slowed, waved off, and deployed. My faithful Spectre 150, loaded about 1.5, rapidly spun up right out of the bag, about three twists, then continued to spin up and went into a dive. I'd like to say I did everything textbook, but I didn't. I yanked both handles just about simultaneously. The reserve pilot chute came off my back and around me ( I was spinning on my back at cutaway) and came up into my sight as my canopy left. The pilot chute was just sitting there, and showed no signs of taking the bag out, because I was on my back. I rolled over belly to earth, away from the bridle into a boxman and waited what seemed like a very long time. It wasn't. Bang, I have a canopy, very pretty sky blue, big ole' risers, metal connecting links. 1200 feet. I tossed my cutaway handle, but I've got my reserve handle. Damn. These are the tie-die ones.. The canopy ride was no big deal, cause I did a ten minute ride or so from 14K on a PDR143 on a demo day. They sink faster, but handle similarly to my Spectres. Lessons? Practice emergency procedures all the time. Have someone else drill you. I have never practiced cutting away in a hanging harness. I really wish I had, it probably would have improved my performance. I will cutaway and wait a beat before pulling my reserve ripcord next time. Maybe it will be 488 jumps from now. That's how many it took to get to this one. Thanks Vic Krusi. That case of Guinness is chillin.
Deuce 1 #2 June 16, 2003 The rest. Oh, 12 jumps for the weekend. Six Saturday, the last one was the cutaway, I'da jumped again, but it was getting late (gotta get home for dinner) And six today. All tandem videos. Father's day is a big tandem draw. Back in the saddle. Actually more confident than before. Humbler, more serious about emergency procedures. But not a thought of giving this up. ECVZZ 0 #4 June 16, 2003 Nice job Deuce! Now...WTF are you doing jumping on that ankle??? PS- looks like you handled things just fine. Proud of you! G. Jones "I've never been quarantined. AggieDave 6 #5 June 16, 2003 Well, I'm very glad to see you didn't do what I did when I had a spinning mal! See, even old faithful friends screw up sometimes. I bet your ol' buddy Spectre doesn't do that again for a while.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
Deuce 1 #6 June 16, 2003 QuoteNice job Deuce! Now...WTF are you doing jumping on that ankle??? PS- looks like you handled things just fine. Proud of you! Butt-slide landings. Even on the reserve. I got good at it when the knee was out. The ankle is immobilized and protected in a rigid brace. Frankly, it's nice to have the agility I have in the air, cause I'm pretty slow-moving on the ground. quade 4 #8 June 16, 2003 Unless you're really, really low and are going to die anyway -- ya gotta have a stable belly to earth deployment when you're wearing camera. Good luck on this one, but don't try to be a human RSL. There's a reason we don't wear RSLs while flying camera. Of course, you knew that. quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
Faber 0 #9 June 16, 2003 your bridel from your reserve is pretty close to your camerarember to be belly to earth while pulling reserve by camera How ever cool pics, specialy the one were you have cutted and the 3ring is working on release Good to see you reacted on that Stay safe Stefan Faber
