How to spin-up a Spectre and live. My first chop. (Pictures)

I love gif #2...the moment of KA-Ching!;)
Congrats on saving yourself.

I agree, glad you are ok. I know the view my friend and its branded on my brain. The spin cycle, very bizzare. Automatic reflex starts to happen, so practice drills.

Indeed Pic #2 is a fine thing to see. I had no idea what color my reserve was. I recall thinking, -Huh, its white.-

I couldnt make it back and I landed near my main. I thought I was supposed to land with my main. A JM thought I was spiraling down to land way off at first, then landed with me.

I was SO right out of the box & brand new. :S 80-100 jumps. There were several immediate questions..

To the JM that landed by me, I asked- What was that black thing that flew by me? JM says - Uh, your free bag.. ~ Back at the DZ- Did you save your handles? I said- Handles? Was I supposed to?? Screw that, I was busy. ~ What happened Ann? - Well, it was messed up. So I cutaway. ~ Ok, ... What did it look like? - Um, lines were twisted really far up, I couldnt get one toggle down, and the left side was bent over about 1/4 to the inside and I could see over my main to the horizon.

Everyone said, Line over. The packer said, Sorry. I said, Whatever, no worries!!! - The reserve had 10 fingers and 10 toes - thats all I cared about.

I do two-handed pulls, so maybe that thing wouldn't happen. How about everyone else: Do you use two hands, or a hand on each handle??

If anyone was in Chambersburg for safety day, they'll remember I had nine cutaways that day!!:o

Hanging harness practice is a good thing to do.B|

I was taught two handed pulls.

On my spin the 2nd hand was tuff to get up and pull. After I cut, I spun/slid backwards and away. I was pulling and it went freely so I can not say if it was me or the RSL. But I know I had started to pull and it seemed to release my reserve.

But, yes - 2-handed.
:D

Two handed pulls would have been better. I have a little trouble with that because of my build. My left arm is at full extension to my right handle, same on the other side. I'll practice that in the hanging harness when I get a chance, and see if it will work for me.

The handles were right where I expected them to be, right where I practiced grabbing them, so even under G's they hadn't shifted much. I think that is probably a benefit of having custom fitted kit.

Hey, this is Talkback, so what the heck. It's like sex. Until you've done it, you really don't know. The cutaway thing done for real.

SCREW THAT!! I watched a video of an Army guy with no AAD go SPLAT in front of a crowd. He cut away from a bag lock and then spent the rest of his life slapping his reserve handle. He panicked....plain and simple. I want to have both handles positively before I chop. Less to think about and what if your reserve handle was rolled under or something?

Chop1 looks hauntingly familiar - like whne I chopped my Spectre.

You're grounded young man! No more scaring me like this... first your ankle, now a cutaway? What am I going to do with you?

Pfah! Too late! I got six more jumps the next day, two on the "Hippie Rig" (Bytch named it that because of the tie die). The video concession owner packed it back up so I could hustle video on Sunday.

You're the one who's grounded, or should I say "sanded":P

I bet you've got ground poisoning so bad you'd volunteer for a spinning mal just to get 60 seconds of air time!;)

Thanks NoShit, can you confirm if you're going to the American Boogie?

Cheers.

JP, Good Job, Glad to here everything is well...

Which day was the chop? Saturday or Sunday?

I had a cutaway on Saturday - It's Sure Better Than Coffee In The Morning [bad line from movie]

Then I had to go jump a demo at a HS graduation.... Man, my nerves were shot by the end of the day....:P

Again, good to hear all is well..

TB

Once the plane takes off, you're gonna have to land - Might as well jump out!!

I loved that airport! Downhill runway into a hill! I was a lunatic teenage pilot in those days.

I'm sorry to say, no. It's houses now, but not under my house.

Most of those folks relocated to Byron, and some originals from that era that are still very active are Marty Martinez, Mad-John Dobleman, and Randy. I have a great vintage videotape of "round" static line training that Mad John taught. That spirit definitely lives on at Byron.

Cheers.

Hey Deuce, no confirmation on the American Boogie yet for the weekend. I can definitely come and play Wednesday, Thursday and/or Friday. However, if it is busy at SMB on the weekend, I'll be there doing AFF and video. Is anyone coming out during the week? I'd like to see and jump with everyone!

I'll be there all day Thursday and Friday, Betsy and Freeflyz will be there Thursday too.

Well, Freeflyz will be there if he can get his Mom to give him a ride to SDA Thursday morning...

Monterey's Otter might end up there so maybe you could hitch a ride.

wow - scary pics. glad you were able to walk away from that.

I had a chance to see chop1.gif myself this weekend. Deployed in a max track only to feel my PC bounce off my ankle and felt my bag do a bounce or two off my back as well. After a few odd tugs behind me it stood me up but I had my chin pinned to my chest since it was spun up all the way down my risers behind my helmet. I tried to look up to see what the issue was and caught a slight glimpse of my canopy diving and turning towards the ground and pointed backwards from my prospective. I was on my side as it was turning and it was trying to flip me onto my back, but luckily I jump a 170 Stiletto under a 1.5 wingloading and it just didn't spin or dive too much. Check my alti to see I am passing thru 2200 (and very happy I pulled around 3000 instead of 2500) and grabbed both handles....a couple strange thoughts come thru my head: 1) Hmm...can't remember who packed my reserve 2)this is going to freak my friend out more than me and 3) oh yea, ARCH! As I arched and was about to pull red, the risers slipped over my helmet and I could see the twist started just around my toggles and went up higher than I had ever seen before. I figured I would give it one kick.....I kicked hard, the canopy stopped diving, stood me up and started to fly away from the dz.....check alti - I'm at 2000...kicked and pulled hard! 14 twists total and I'm flying under my canopy again - grab toggles, control check, check alti to see I am at 1800. Phew. Just barely made it back to the landing area. Packed up and had one hell of a jump a couple loads later.

Good to know that my training can kick in - first (yea, yea) time I have ever had to go to my handles in five years.

The one thought I had, and I've had it before, on problems that didn't amount to malfunctions, is "Don't f*ck with this for the rest of your life". In Chop1.gif I thought that to myself and chopped it.;)

Yeah, Freeflyz, I feel you....

Okay, well I really want to see you and Freeflyz and Deuce there. Is Chop Chop anywhere in the house? Can I have a witness???

OK so Chop, if you are in the house, confirmation on your ETA dates for the American BOogie. How bout the infamous Skymama? Skymama, you gotta get there by Fri. I'm tellin ya that raft is screaming out to us. I'll bring the snorkels and the fins!

Ok so I am available to come to the American Boogie Wed, Thurs, Fri. Looks like I am opting for Thurs & Fri. BTW, SMB's otter will not be there so hitching a ride with the plane is a no go.

Blues,
