Blahr 0 #52 June 20, 2003 Too bad, I could have dedicated one whole Netra to 24x7 crunching with an 450 MHz Ultrasparc II, but you have no Solaris version...Got a Redhat box I can put on it, not as much crunching power though...
Guest #53 June 20, 2003 QuoteOr you can aspire to ultimate slackdom. Using VNC, you don't even have to have a KVM. Just run the servers without anything other than power and network cables. Then they aren't even limited to cable distance. You can reach ultimate slackdom through the Internet. You can be in your server room, or in your house in your underwear. The servers don't care. With Linux, that's available by default."The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat."
jfields 0 #54 June 20, 2003 Quotenot as much crunching power though... No worries. Do what you can. Do you remember the TV show Battlestar Gallactica? The "ragtag fleet" or ships trying to find Earth? I have a "ragtag fleet" of computers, working on Folding. Some crappy old workstations, 200 mhz, 266s, 300s, 350s, 450s, a 667, some dual 650 servers, etc. I have a few fast (2+ ghz) boxes, but most of mine are old clunkers just chugging away. CrazyIvan 0 #55 June 20, 2003 Here, the systems I use most of the time (in my room, I'm not including my Novell server, printer, and other things such as scanner and VCR and 2 laptops) Those 2 things on top of the PC's are the Router and Palm Pilot craddle, and the pic of my 4 port KVM switch. Geeky huh? __________________________________________ Blue Skies and May the Force be with you.

Dogbert : "I'm attracted by the potential for reckless abuse of power" - Hmmm.. pow-er "I have forgotten my password. I humbly beg for assistance." "I have no time for boring administrative tasks, you fool! I'm too busy upgrading the network." "You could have given me a new password in the time it took to belittle me." The "ragtag fleet" or ships trying to find Earth? Viola! I now have a Dual 800 MHz P-III Redhat box on the job. I guess my name shows up as soon as I've crunched one block? MattM 0 #60 June 20, 2003 Another dilbert strip... Dilbert to his boss: We need to upgrade our PC operating systems, so we can have a stable environment for applications. Actually, I had one of those, a dual processor 200Mhz, I bought it at a computer show here in NJ, I used it for a couple of months and sold it to a friend, I needed more power. I just paid $250.__________________________________________ Blue Skies and May the Force be with you.

TattooedMoFo 0 #69 June 20, 2003 QuoteQuoteCurrently have 1500 desktops and about 1000 servers and although the servers are neat the desktops are sometimes all over the place. What machines are those in the Pic any way?? You're ratio of servers to desktops is kinda... weird. Not really, our company is a finacial institution, so most are Application/Dbase/development servers. We no longer look after the SUN kit (which I didnt include)just became to much so couldn't even tell you what systems they are running there, I know they have just purchased 2 monster SUN servers about $3mil each, but not sure what they are yet, havn't seen them. That doesnt mean that it will run on Linux running on a Sun box. the software still have to written for the 64 bit sparc instruction set.
