fasterfaller 0 #1 June 19, 2003 I am going to build a website for a company that I am going to open next fall . I need to know the best place to register the domain name of the website would be . I also need to know who I should contact to host the site . It will not be a high traffic site but I will need a lot of storage and I dont want to spend a ton of money on it right now as it will be over a year before the doors open . Right now I am willing to spend about $250 a year for hosting service . Any help on software to build the site would be helpful as I am going to do it myself . BlueEyedMonster 0 #3 June 19, 2003 My domain name is registered through http://www.dotster.com They have a forwarder service. So you can change hosts all you want, taking whoever is cheaper, and all you need to do is go type in the new address on dotster's config utility. For commercial hosting... look around locally, or Yahoo actually has a very cheap and dependable setup. http://webhosting.yahoo.com/ps/wh/prod/

fasterfaller 0 #5 June 20, 2003 Yahoo looks good for hosting as long as I do not have yahoo anywhere in my web address . The info I need the most is what software to use to create this site . Should I use a package from Adobe , Microsoft or ?????

PhreeZone 20 #7 June 20, 2003 If your doing a professional business... have a professional do your webpage unless you really want to sit down and learn HTML, ASP, XML and a lot more about the Internet then you probally ever wanted to know. I do most my stuff in Notepad and Frontpage, I use some Dreamweaver for a few things and GoLive for other things. Photoshop to creat banners and modify pictures. All told its probally $1000+ in software I use to play with. I use www.readyhosting.com for my site at www.cajunchickens.com and it works. But honestly... a poorly designed website can sink your business as fast as doing poor work can. I know a few design studios that do work on a contract basis for about 150 for 5 pages with full graphics and going up from there. Ask around some and see what you can get. Most good shops will do hosting for you too.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

Should I use a package from Adobe , Microsoft or ????? If you use the forwarder on dotster or pay for domain service through yahoo, you will only see your domain name. My site is actually hosted by AT&T, but only my domain is visible. As for software to do your site in, If you do not know this already or/and have the graphical and layout skills necessary, my advice is to pay someone who does to build it for you. This will be important for your business. Don't make it look like a newbie built your site.
fasterfaller 0 #9 June 20, 2003 Thanks Phree , I have a good friend that does websites for a living and she is going to help out . I am going to build most of the site and she will do the final work for me . I just want to have a basic layout that is close to the finished product that I want . Otherwise it is guaranteed she will be re-doing virtually all of your design cept the content. ---------------------------------------------------- If the shit fits - wear it (blues brothers)--

fasterfaller 0 #13 June 20, 2003 I've never been one to take the easy route . I have a lot of free time now that I am only doing short term contract consulting work and I enjoy a challenge . I think it will be fun to at least make an attempt at making a site . I have a year to get it done since I do not plan on starting operations until at least september of 2004 . I plan on having a pro go through and do the final setup but I want to find out how close I can come to making it work and look good .

PhreeZone 20 #16 June 20, 2003 The issue is that poorly written code or even code thats not how I like it makes it so hard to work with that I'll just as soon restart a project as I will try to correct too many issues in an existing one. If you want to make an attempt at a page more power to you and you might as well learn the languages so you can maintain the pages, but don't feel bad if none of your code makes it to the final version.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
