skymama 37 #1 June 16, 2003 Next week, I'll be spending an afternoon in Portland with my kids and then I'll be going out to dinner with my best friend of 25 years (damn, we're old!). Any suggestions of something good to do with the kids, or a fun place for adults to eat?She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon

If you were asking about downtown Seattle, I could clue you in, but I haven't been to Portland for at least 5 years - sorry. If you're going downtown, you could try the Galleria."The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat."

Yeah I lived there for 2 years. But couldn't stand LIVING there. But, it is a great place to visit. I recommend Multinomah Falls. The kids might like OMSI http://www.omsi.edu/ Playing in the tide pools on the coast is always a blast! The water is cold, but the critters are fun. sdctlc 0 #7 June 16, 2003 I lived down in Portland for a couple of years and it is a great little town. There are a bunch of things I miss about it compared to living in the Seattle area, which is also a great place to live. But that said depending on what you looking to do you will probably have a number of choices. Check out the link below to see if anything looks good. http://portland.citysearch.com/ There are a number of sites out there but this one is pretty good for getting info and stuff to do.... billvon 2,991 #8 June 16, 2003 OMSI for the kids. For the adults, go to a movie at the Baghdad. Movies are $1 and there's a brewery and pizza place in the lobby - and they will bring the pizza to your table in the theatre. If you like bookstores, Powell's is about the best bookstore in the world. NW Portland is great for atmosphere (lots of coffee places, bars, restaraunts etc.) McMenamin's has great beer; they also run the Baghdad.

KawiZX900 0 #10 June 16, 2003 I forgot about that..... I really, really don't like someone else pumping my gas... It seems like an invasion of privacy to me... And there are A LOT of tree hugging hippies there...... too many of them, actually..... speaking of dirty hippies.... I'm going to buy a t shirt that says "Hippies Smell" and go into Eatiopia (SD natural/raw/hippie/made with love) food joint. where people have names like "Freedom" and "Justice" and I'm going to wear my HIppies smell t shirt and buy a yummy pina colada smoothie... I really like the food there, I just don't agree with giving up on the real world and disturbing the beauty of the sunset with some off beat African drumming crowd that hangs out in the neighborhood.. Accelerate hard to get them looking, then slam on the fronts and rollright beside the car, hanging the back wheel at eye level for a few seconds. Guaranteed reaction- Dave Sonsky

dorothy 0 #13 June 16, 2003 if you like mediterranean food, there's a really good Turkish place close to the convention center. They make fresh pita bread the size of a platter and babaganush and hummus to die for.

jumprunner 0 #15 June 16, 2003 I forgot about that..... I really, really don't like someone else pumping my gas... It seems like an invasion of privacy to me... My sister told me about this, evidentally you cant pump your own gas for the only reason that these people need jobs and would be on welfare otherwise. if you like mediterranean food, there's a really good Turkish place close to the convention center. They make fresh pita bread the size of a platter and babaganush and hummus to die for. How about Turkish coffee with Saganaki (flaming cheese), its like having a "food orgasm".....ahhhhh!
 HRHSkyPrincess 0 #16 June 16, 2003 Yes, I do! Grew up on the Oregon Coast and lived in Portland years ago! I agree, OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry) is a hands-on fun thing for kids. Also, there used to be an old turn-of-the-century carousel at the Jantzen Beach Mall. Kids of all ages like it. If you and your girlfriend have some kid-free time, visit Powell's Books. They give you a map upon entering...seriously, you could spend hours there. Agree to meet after a certain time...I found some old Dan Poynter books. They have everything! There's a restaurant called the Oyster Bar in the same old town/downtown area that's been there for decades. Downtown is very pedestrian/bicyle friendly. If you have time to drive to Oregon Coast, head for Depoe Bay and the Spouting Horn Restaurant. Order Fish and Chips, small shrimp/crab salad, and some of Betty's homemade pies (famous in the NW). Tell her "Puddy Cat" sent ya!! You're going to have a great trip...enjoy the spectacular scenery.***************** Attitude is everything!
 bbarnhouse 0 #17 June 16, 2003 The kids will enjoy the Washington Park Zoo, you'll enjoy the Japanese Gardens. Waterfront Park is nice, visit China Town and then treat yourself to Jake's. If you make it to the coast try Mo's, best chowder this side of New England. OMSI is a must! The kids will enjoy touring the submarine. On the way to Seattle try the Enchanted Forest, a huge water and amusement park. Seattle is home to the Pike Place Market right on the water. One could spend hours there. The Woodland Park Zoo is all natural habitat and to really see it plan to spend an entire day. The kids will enjoy seeing the silver back gorilla with the females and their young nesting. Ohhhhhh so much to see...so little time. If you go up to the second floor on weekends, they have music with belly dancing and plate breaking among other things. I also found Boogie Woogies to be fun it is a dueling piano bar (sound weird but it is a blast). If you are just looking for drinks and dinner there is a lot of places in downtown Portland. Of course if you have time the most fun thing to do is go skydiving in Molalla. Kirk
 Gawain 0 #19 June 16, 2003 Mother's Bistro downtown. It's within walking distance (SW part of the city). Also, the NW portion of the city is fun. If you can fanagle some jumping, Skydive Oregon has some really nice people. That's where I learned how to jump. Pretty difficult to find a bad place to eat there.
