exercise balanced out all the cholesterol and fat intake. It's all about balance

ummm... exercise doesn't really 'balance out' the cholesterol and fat intake, just the excess calories associated with them (and fats are 3 times as calorie dense as carbohydrates)... a diet high in cholesterol and fat can still clog your arteries over time, even if you're not obese as result of that diet...

Well.....I had to get Flight Physicals every year since I was on jump/flying status. My cholesterol was always pretty low. About 144 or so. Now...yes my Triglycerides (SP?) were a little on the high side. The Doc would usually tell me I could cut back on fries. :D I'm not a Doc so I never really understood the relationship between the two but they never seemed concerned.

McDonalds Hamburger University?

Nahh...she was a dental tech until she had a car accident and goofed up her back. Now the bending over all day doesn't work for her so she manages an Orthodontist's office.

A big greasy burger never looked as appetizing to me as a chicken breast with tons of onions, mushrooms, tomatoes,

If everyone decreased their red meat consumption, the world would be a much better place!

You mean like India?

That statement always cracks me up. How would that make the world a better place? Now it might make the ride to altitude better for some. ;)

That's exacly like me saying "You know, if people decreased their chicken consumption, the world would be a much better place!".

Eat what you want, in moderation. Except Veal, now that, IMO, we could do without.

Yes, which is why it's important to properly cook chicken.

I didn't know there was a correlation between eating cows and income.

In a way, it would. But, chickens are not as bad for the environment, and it's not as bad for one's health.

Twinkies, even in moderation, are bad for you. Everclear, even in moderation, is bad for you. Not everything is good for you in moderation. Plus, people have odd views on what moderation is.

Actually, since humans are omnivores, there's a wide variety of diets that are healthy if done right.

In different parts of the world there are people who are pretty much vegetarian, and in other parts people who are even more carnivorous than the average American. Siberians, for example, eat a predominantly meat-oriented diet, especially during the colder months. And Argentinians eat a lot of meat as well. Many of these people who eat MORE meat than the average American are leaner and more fit than the average American.

It also has to do with what kind of red meat you're eating. A lot of people on this thread think that red meat= tons of fat & cholesterol. But meat from wild animals (reindeer, rabbits, etc.) is often very lean. And beef & pork in the supermarket can be very low in fat if you choose the proper cuts (tenderloin, top round, london broil, etc.) These cuts are actually much lower in fat than tofu.

Fat Americans get that way from sitting on their asses at work all day, then driving home and sitting on their asses in front of the TV. You gotta look at the lifestyle as a whole. It's simplistic to say that "red meat" is the big culprit here.

not at all...i could eat one twinky a week (which is certainly moderate) an never have ANY ill health effects because of it.. i could consume one bottle of everclear a month just as easily (well except what i did while i was drinking it)

EVERYTHING is fine in moderation just as EVERYTHING is bad for you in excess (even air & water..but maybe not skydiving;))

the issue is determining what defines excess and moderation for every single substance, for every individual. Its far easier to cross the line with some foods than others..

To claim that any vegetarian is significantly better off (ie More healthy) than an equally health conscious carnivore is ludicrous..they just eat different amounts of different foods..the majority of arguments made against any red meat as a part of healthy life style are just as much propaganda as the "meat and potatoes" speil from the cattlemen..and some times there is nothing better that a bleeding slab of seared flesh...

Life feeds on life feeds on life feeds on life…

Yep......I found that cutting back on carbs and more specifically just bread has helped me out a lot. I can actually eat somewhat regularly now that I don't have tons of bread with every meal.
