jerm 0 #51 June 13, 2003 dunno.... i heard some pretty cool ideas about this, at least for the southwest.... basically automated fueling stations lines with solar panels that just sit there and make H2 all day long from the truckloads of water that get delivered.. would they keep up with demand once things hit the bigtime? dunno, but it sounds like a great way to get the infrastructure built up. Landing without injury is not necessarily evidence that you didn't fuck up... it just means you got away with it this time
livendive 8 #52 June 13, 2003 QuoteGlancing over the posts, I don't think it was brought up/ansered: Is there an alternative fuel car/truck out there that can match the power my 5.7L 350 V-8 has in my truck? 350lbs of torque and about 280 horsepower. Although I don't always need that power, I still use it quite a bit, seems like every other week I'm hauling a load of something somewhere or pulling a trailer, or even getting my 5,000lbs truck through some serious mud. Here are a couple: http://www.gm.com/automotive/innovations/altfuel/vehicles/silverado_sierra.htm With the ethanol version, you'd gain 5 hp and lose 25 lb.ft. of torque. GM is supposed to start selling full-size hybrid trucks this fall. Your checking account will still know it's a truck, but at a speculated 22ish mpg, it's a substantial improvement over current gasoline efficiency. I drive a Toyota Tundra, while my girlfriend commutes in a Civic. Just last night she was telling me she spent $59 on gas last month...or about what I spend every 10 days fueling the truck. That extra 6 mpg would save me around $525 per year (assuming $1.60/gallon), in addition to being a bit more environmentally friendly. Blues, Dave"I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" freefallfreak 0 #53 June 13, 2003 Uhh, I guess my little Pro-Street rod, bastardized by a chevy engine in a ford body, at 4 mpg and 147.628 mph in a quarter, disqualifies me?? FFF

I ran the math once, and you'd need several acres of panels to make enough hydrogen for even a moderately busy station. And if you were going to do that, why not send the power back into the grid at 95% efficiency, rather than put it in a fuel cell car and get 50% efficiency out of the cycle? That way you can shut down a coal-fired power plant or two and do a lot more good for the environment. Better yet, shut down a natural gas fired power plant and use the extra natural gas to power the cars.
