benw853 0 #1 February 16, 2012 How many times can you really downsize in a container before it become to soft? I have heard many answers. between 1 and 3 sizes depending on cells, closing loop length, closing loop placement, canopy pack volume, manufacturer, ect. anyone who has actually tested this would be much appreciated.to be more specific, I have a Dolphin D-6 and a 9-cell 260. I want a Sabre2 230. any educated suggestions?
NWFlyer 2 #2 February 16, 2012 It depends. Canopies even within a given size can vary greatly in pack volume. 9 cell vs 7 cell. Crossbraced vs non. Low bulk fabric vs regular ZP. Rule of thumb would be take the size the container was built for and you can go one size up and one down from there, but YMMV based on the factors listed above, among others."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. adventurechick 0 #3 February 16, 2012 With Infinity containers (made by Velocity Sports Equipment) if you write Spectre 190 on your order form. You will not be able to put a 210 in there. You would be able to put a 190 in there, a 170, and possibly down to a 150, but we suggest for you to check the pin tension if you go down two sizes. Other companies may go one up one down, but we try to make it where you can go two down as long as the tensions are checked. Hope this helps! :-) Blue Skies, Gail Lovelace Velocity Sports Equipment www.velocityrigs.com www.facebook.com/infinityrigs
jumpsalot-2 3 #4 February 17, 2012 Hi Gail, How things are made to be used, and how they are sometimes used, can be two different things. I put 300+ jumps on my 209 Safire 2, packed in my I-44, as you know it is made for a 170. At least once, I even packed a Black Jack 280 in it for a hop 'n pop...CRW style...no bag....fabric visible........I have a larger Infinity now, sized 210-230 main. Never ever had a problem ever, 100+ wingsuit jumps with the I-44/209 that way also. Life is short ... jump often.
councilman24 37 #5 February 17, 2012 It also depends on the kind of main loop. If the loop starts on one flap and gathers the other 3 the container has to be full enough to put pressure on the flaps and hence the loop. For container like a Dolphin where the loop is anchored on the main/reserve wall you can GET AWAY WITH making is smaller to get tension on on a smaller canopy. But this is NOT recommended except for maybe a demo jump. Remember also the D bag has to be full enough for the locking stows to have tension on them. I've see bags empty enough to not have much if any tension on the locking stows. The good news that there is more range now with ZP canopies than there was with F-111 canopies. ZP tends to expand to fill the space they have more. But nobody remembers this because so few people start with or jump F-111 type canopies.I'm old for my age. chuckakers 425 #6 February 17, 2012 While it may not be ok by today's gear standards, we had a little trick back in the day to deal with downsizing canopies. When a container got too big to safely accommodate a canopy, we would tack a piece of foam padding into the bottom of the pack tray to help fill it up and keep the container sufficiently snug while packed. It came with the side benefit of making the canopy really easy to get into the deployment bag too. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX
