Broken Thumb on deployment.

Got a call from a friend this morning. At work, there is a guy with a broken thumb, seems this happen on deployment when his thumb was inserted or got stuck in a PVC tube style deployment handle. Jumper is ok, very very painful at flair time. I was told that the rig was not what jumper usually jumped.

This is third hand knowledge, I was not there. Anymore infor out there? Incident happend at southern California DZ. Moderators, If this incendent is not of substantial nature, please delete.

I got my thumb in several time. There is a quite simple solution for that: use some duct tape and tape the hole over.

I prefer the monkey fist to the PVC for this exact reason, and I prefer them both to the hackey sack, which is just too heavy for my taste.

There could be a problem with monkey fist. The heavier handle might make a know on the PC... It has happened in flying wing suit several times.

I had a similar incident with a hook knife. Guy had it mounted on his chest strap. Taking grips for exit, I grabbed his chest strap and most unfortunately my finger went perfectly thru one of the finger holes of his knife handle, past the 2nd knuckle. Exit went well until I could not get my finger out; and he kept pulling harder and harder to peel my hand away. It finally came out (maybe 10 seconds) leaving me with a badly bruised and swollen finger. After reading the thread on the weaknesses of the plastic handled knives, I went and got a metal one - and I got it with the single opening instead of finger holes.

I just curious as to how sticking a thumb or finger into a PVC handle breaks the digit.

The handle is on TOP of the pilot chute and it shouldn't inflate until you let it go...and if the bone broke from just pulling it out, someone needs to drink more milk!
