So here I am buying a sub at my favorite place to eat, subway, when the lady at the couter asks me
" What happened to your eye?"
I tell her it was skydiving related.

After talking about my eye for a second she tells me that she skydives and that she is an instructor. That is pretty cool I'm thinking we have something in common and we can talk about it.

Turns out this lady was talking BS the whole time. I asked her what kind of setup she has. " I don't know" she says " I have to many jumps to keep track of that sort of thing" Blasphemy!

Seemed like such a nice lady and now she is just a lying wuffo. And why? Because she thinks it will make a difference to me.

I was in a business meeting last year with employees from the company buying us out.

During the presentation the woman brought up some pics of herself in skydiving gear and began to go on about how she was a jumper, and how wonderful it was. And all her co-workers were saying how they couldn't believe she jumped and how nuts she was, etc.. etc...

When I started asking questions and they learned I had 2000+ jumps, I learned that she had done ONE tandom at SDD, and the pics she had were in another person's gear.

No telling why they do it.

Oh well. must get back to the job search.

I've had two people do this to me. It was totally stupid. The first guy told me he jumped from a farmers airplane with no training at all.He said he was " real high like 2000 feet or something." When I asked how long his delay was his reply was " I don't know, maybe like 500 ft? " When I asked him about his gear he said he didn't know but it was one of those directional kinds.
The second guy told me he had over 500 jumps and he was learning to do tricks.
I don't understand why people would lie like this.So I just called them both out and made asses of them in front of thier friends.

I've met ex-jumpers, but they generally knew names I knew; one was even the source of some fairly famous local legends, or else present when they were born. Kinda hard to know those...

Funny you should say that, she was kinda cute but in an older woman sort of way. She was about 40 but looks like an arobic instuctor.

Usually the first thing I ask is where they jump.

99% of these types don't even know where the dropzones are. I'm really amazed at how many of these people there are. Why don't people lie about being tennis players or skateboarders or something?

This woman must have known something about the sport becuase that was the first thing I asked and she replied with "Not Gimili" which is one of our local dropzones here in Manitoba.

The thing that really made me question her is when she told me a story she had about a mal.

She told me that she was jumping and went to pull her PC and it didn't come out. She was holding on the the end but the chute didn't come out.

Okay MAYBE the plastic piece came off, but then she says the she pulls her reserve cord and it didn't open. I asked her how she did that and she said I just pulled the other cord.

Having low jump numbers myself I still have some of the basic terminology down and know that the "backup" is not called the backup.

Actually Pete, it's beginning to sound like she might have made 'one' jump at Steinbach... a bad one at that. ("Not Gimli, like we might say "Not Steinbach") ... or maybe she did her jump in the late 70's under hand-deployed rounds?

As for hard pulls, we've had those on DZ recently (Dr. mike had an equipment issue that has since been fixed).

I wonder what possesses people to make up something that they have no idea about to someone who actually does.

I mean, what if the situation were reversed and you told the girl, "Yeah, I used to work at Subway ... none around here though. I was so good they made me manager after 3 days of working. The only problem I used to have was with ordering the bread, but I used the backup distributor and it was fine."

How on earth do these people think they'll get away with it???? This isn't a rhetorical question, btw.

It's for the same reason actor Brian Dennehy felt compelled to lie about his military service.

Our society places great emphasis on appearances; i.e., making an initial first impression through good looks and glibness, rather than actual substance. It's a sales/marketing tactic in a consumer society, where who or what you are is nowhere as important as what others think you are.

When real integrity, hard work and achievement are often dismissed, ignored or even punished (how much do school teachers make compared to sports figures?), but people in show business earn ridiculous amounts of money, some people naturally think that flamboyance=prosperity, and therefore tend to fluff their resume´. The more lacking they are in character and integrity, the more severe it will be. Self-esteem or lack thereof plays a role, but it's not the critical one in this case. The critical factor is reality and one's perception of it. The weaker this connection is, the easier it is to engage in this kind of behavior.

So in summary, it's nothing more than simple self-delusion. They feel justified in lying because they think it's necessary for their careers, or making a strong, lasting impression is somehow important in what they do for a living. Or perhaps in the case of the initial post in this thread, somebody is trying to make a social climb, and will therefore believe that the ends justify the means.

Fortunately, it's pretty easy to bust phonies.

This is all well and good (not admirable, but understandable) when you can actually pull the appearance thing off. But why would anybody who doesn't know anything about a subject feel that they would be capable of speaking about it with someone who does? How could they not expect to get busted?
