Amazon 7 #7 May 26, 2003 Another good point to remember about quitting smoking. When I did my altitude chamber training the instructors equated one pack of cigarettes a day to being 5000' higher in altitude. The ability of the body to uptake oxygen was hampered by the carbon monoxide loading of the blood cells hemoglobin. So while you are standing at the top of Mt Whitney at 14,495' breathe deeply and enjoy the view. And since you will have a clear head and not a pounding headache, suffering from anoxia of a pseudo altitude of 19,000'Amazon
riggerrob 643 #8 May 26, 2003 Also remember that if you quit smoking for a year, you can afford a new reserve.

dropdeded 0 #10 May 27, 2003 What a day.Man,I have NEVER done a hike like that in my life.We didnt get started til friggin 10:00.We got as far as approx 11,200 and it was 3:00, we were probably about 300ft above Mirror lake and hit deep, soft snow.People were coming down but there was no way we could continue that late, especially without snow equipment. On the weekend of june 8th,we are gonna stay in Lone Pine and hit the mountain at 6:00 am.The snow is melting fast so that wont stop us In the parking lot, walking to the suburban and Bill is like,"I cant find my keys"Well, there they were between the front seats,On a whim I stuck my Saturn key in the door and booyaa,it openedI gotta say that this was an absolutely bitchin day. AND,the cigarettes, fuck em,IM DONE !!! My buddy is gonna download all the pics tomorrow and I will post a couple. dropdeded ------------------------------------------ The Dude Abides. -
Tonto 1 #11 May 27, 2003 How high is Mt Whitney? (I'm in Africa) tIt's the year of the Pig.
Amazon 7 #12 May 27, 2003 Mt Whitney in CA is 14,495 ft. Its the highest peak in the Continental US outside of Alaska.(Mt McKinley also known more properly to those who climb it as Denali is in the Alaska Range, is the highest summit in North America at 20,320 ft) Its in the John Muir Wilderness in the southern Sierra Nevada Mts and is a relatively easy walk up if you are in good condition. Its an 11 mile walk and a 6000ft elevation gain in that distance..oh and its just 85 ft higher that Mt Rainier in WA state which is NOT just a walkup... just to the east of Kapowsin Airsports.. what a view.. Tonto 1 #13 May 27, 2003 OK. So it's not "technical" from a climbing point of view. Few of the big ones are. I did Kilimanjaro last year, highest in Africa at 19340ft, over 6 days, but also higher than Mt Kenya, which requires significant technical skill. I don't know many smokers who perform well above 15000ft - climbing, that is. Even youth has little defense against altitude. The average age for summiting Everest is 46 for men and 42 for women. Thanks for the info. tIt's the year of the Pig.

judyindeskys 0 #16 May 27, 2003 Gary, it works! I lost 20 lbs of fat and gained alot of muscle in 12 weeks. The most difficult part of the plan is working out 6 days a week. The payoff is great and the three days you do cardio is only 20 minutes, but what a great workout in 20 minutes. I just started my second 12 weeks. Good luck. Let me know how you do. judyindeskys
