SpeedRacer 1 #1 April 14, 2003 As I said in an earlier thread, there is a mourning dove living in the transom over my back door. I was going to remove the nest, but as I reached up to get it, I noticed a little egg rolling around in there and so I put it back. The mourning dove is named Skymama, and she has since hatched her eggs & now has two babies. The weird thing is that after I replaced the nest, about a month went by before I realized anything was going on. I could see skymama up there, but I started to think the eggs hadn't hatched. It turns out that the eggs DID hatch, but she was keeping the babies warm and hiding them from view by basically sitting on them, so I didn't see them until they had grown too big for her to cover them. Anyway, some of these pictures were taken before I knew she had had the babies successfully. Then later I will post the pics of the babies themselves. Here are pictures of Skymama: The last is a shot of Skymama's butt! Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------
jfields 0 #2 April 14, 2003 I think the other Skymama is much cuter, but if that one is local to you, I guess you work with what you've got.

freakous 0 #5 April 14, 2003 Is that you in the picture with Skymama? I know when you are around birds you should be still and quiet. It doesn't even look like a real person...
SpeedRacer 1 #6 April 14, 2003 BWAHAHAHA! That is a "Hugo, Man of a Thousand Disguises" that I've had since I was 11. It came with all these fake noses, beards, eyebrows, etc. (which I of course, lost over the years) But I love the way it looks. Anyway, last year the mourning dove (possible the same one) BEGAN to build a nest up there, and I took it down when she had only just begun putting sticks up there. Then I put Hugo up there to 'scare" birds away from putting another nest up there, because I didn't want them shitting all over my back porch. This year, it didn't work. Skymama is not so easily frightened. Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------
freakous 0 #7 April 14, 2003 ha, I guess the Dove's have learned the "Hugo" is only scary when drinking adult beverages.

SpeedRacer 1 #11 April 14, 2003 And now, here are the pictures of her babies! I've even see her feed them: She opens her mouth and the baby just sticks its beak in and drinks in the semi-digested food from right out of the mama's throat. gross. These little fluffy guys are growing FAST! I took these pictures on Friday, here is is Monday and I swear they're bigger now. I will post more pics when I get the next roll developed. I am quite pleased with Skymama's progress, and I am delighted with you for letting her stay there and shit on your porch. You shall be duly rewarded if we ever meet in person.Skydiving is for cool people only

SpeedRacer 1 #18 April 16, 2003 I wish there was some way to put the date on all the photos I'm taking now. These little guys are growing fast! Yesterday I noticed their tail feathers had grown out. They're starting to look like mourning doves right now, and less like fluffy, scruffy baby birds. Today they were standing right on the edge of the ledge, as if they were just itching to do their first jump. O andby the way, turns out they HAVE been shitting on the back porch. I just expected to see those big white splotches you get from pigeons. Mourning doves are less than half the size of pigeons so they leave these little tiny dark "stealth turds" which until now I had mistaken for just dirt, bits of bark & leaves, etc. Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------

SpeedRacer 1 #25 April 16, 2003 Mourning Dove facts Click on the two sounds at the bottom. I've heard the sounds they make when they're flying (high-pitched rapid warbling) But the mourning sound: I've heard that in the woods a lot, and always thought it was an owl! It also says that both mom & dad help out with the kids. Hmm, I thought the Dads were all deadbeats, but I guess I was wrong. It's interesting: I've seen another mourning dove hanging around on the telephone wire. They're both there right now, perched about 3 feet away from each other! So some of these Skymama shots may have actually been Skypapa. Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------
