wuffos everywhere

Recommended Posts

When I first started reading the forums, I had to ask what a wuffo was. Now that I am about 4 months into the sport, and have my lic., and jump just about 1-2 times a week I realize they are everywhere. Those darn wuffo's...my parents...my freinds...my co-worker (including boss)...my wife, heck i bet my dog would ask if he could. They just don't get what a thrill it is to fell, in my opinion, toaly free of everything for 60 sec at a time.
My parents came to the drop zone for the first time last sat. They sat and watch some come down, but they lpanned it so they didn't have to watch me. It still scares them to think of there son jumping. They didn't plan it very well because they managed to drive up just as I got under canopy, all they could really say was, "that was cool, why do you do it?" If they only knew. I guess it really payed off because they are buy my gear. i think it is because if I die, they can say it was all my fualt. Thought i would share that cool news with ya all.

I am lucky to have very understanding parental units. They are very supportive about my sport. It also gives them something to talk and brag to their friends about. Seems to them it is more of a novelty item to them. ;-) I can see it now.... "My son is a great kid who plays football." "Well my sons jumps out of anything that will fly." LOL!! I let them have their fun with it. Anyone else have supportive parents?

Supportive parents? LOL My Father wishes I would "take up something safer, like bicycleing" My mother doesn't think much of it. I asked her what she thought and she said, " I don't like it, but if that is what you want to do, then don't let anyone stop you."

My dad was actually proud of me the first time I jumped. It was the second, third, fourth.....etc. times that he has had a problem with. He refuses to even listen to me talk about it.

Most of the people I work with have asked me about it once....the usual set of whuffo questions and then just accepted that that is who I am. Kinda cool.

I really never get sick of people asking those whuffo questions....it gives me an excuse to talk about my favorite topic!

Mine brag about me too. On the supportive front, I don't think I've ever come across a Mum like mine:

I was in hospital recovering from a canopy collision (main injury was concussion, I was VERY lucky!). She asked me whether I would jump again, and hesitantly I said yes. Her reply was "Good, I'd hate to see you give up something you really enjoy just because you were stupid once. Just make sure you aren't stupid again. You also seem to have made some great friends skydiving, and it would be a shame to loose them"

My Dad is so into my skydiving. I think I might even talk him into make his first jump. The only reason my Mom likes me skydiving is because I told her that if I wasn't skydiving, I'd be riding motercycles like Dad....she really hates that idea.

I had to go show my Mom and my brother the video from my first AFF jump the day after I did it. I had told them I was going to do it and they both said, "that's cool, tell me how it was." My brother replayed the tape a good 12 twelve times, my mom wanted a tandem for mother's day (perfect timing), and we've been jumping ever since. We are closer as a family than we ever were before. Therapists would starve if their patients only knew skydiving is the answer they've been looking for.

My parents were less than enthusiastic about my new "hobby" (read: obsession) when I was in AFF. I didn't mention anything about jumping to them (unless asked) until I hit my 100th. I showed them the video, including the pieing. It's made the neighborhood rounds 5 times and my Mom did a tandem Mother's Day before last.

It took them 100 jumps to get cool with it.

Go figure.

One of my best friends is whuffo #1, World Champion. He knows what happens, and why we like it, but he's convinced that certain elements of freefying are illegal. He's always going on about the trouble I'll get in if I try "ladders", where 1 person is in sit fly, another in stand up and falls past him, sit fly goes to stand up and goes past other guy etc. No-one I have spoken to has even expresed an interest in doing this, but they all say the idea of it being illegal is ridiculous.

Whuffo still says that it is sooooo serious and sooooo banned that someone told him that someone he heard of knew a guy who saw a skydiver get arrested on the ground for doing this.

Jeez, some people are gullible...

My parents don't even acknowledge that I skydive. If I or someone else brings it up they just get this disgusted look on their faces and a disgusted tone of voice. They were down visitng shortly after I started and there was a canopy collision at FL dz that made the news. My father cut the article out of the paper (as if I didn't know bad things could happen). I tried to explain what they had done to cause what had happened but they didn't hear it. Oh, well.

I could only wish my parents were supportive. I have been blabbering to them about jumping since I was 6 years old. Once I turned 18, they started throwing wrenches into my plans left and right. So I just took my money, and I'm doing it anyway, and now they seem pretty cool about it. My parents brag about it now too, pretty funny.
