Skydiving in Colorado

Recommended Posts

I'll be visiting Colorado in June and I'm looking for recommendations on a place to jump. I'll have a long weekend and will start in Denver. I've already posted in the "places to jump" forum, but I figured this forum sees more traffic...
Any input appreciated!

"Mile-Hi Skydiving" is the closest to Denver in Longmont and it's the largest DZ in the state. We have a King Air and a Cessna 206 and are supposed to have a Super Otter coming online any week now. But in case you didn't hear, the DZO (Jeff Sands) was killed in a plane crash last Saturday. So it remains to be seen what happens with the DZ in the long term.

"Denver Skydivers" is about a 90 minute drive NE from Denver (Brush, CO) and it has a King Air and good vibes all around. I only visited Brush for the first time last Sunday and wasn't able to jump due to certain issues, but I've never heard bad things about the Brush operation.

"Skydive the Rockies" is in Canon City and is about 30 minutes SW from Colorado Springs and about 2 hours or so from downtown Denver. Unless things have changed they have a Caravan 3 out of 4 weekends and they also have two Cessna 206s (or are they 182s). It's a smaller DZ, but the staff is good.

"Front Range Skydivers" in Calhan is about 30 minutes east of Colorado Springs and they have a very nice facility. But I believe they only have the Caravan that SDTR has 1 weekend out of the month. One thing that makes Front Range stand out is the altitude at which you land at (6500' if I'm not mistaken).

There's also a non-USPA DZ right next to SDTR in Canon City, but I don't know much about them.

Also one more thing about jumping in Colorado is that you need to be prepared for faster that usual landings due to the altitude that we land at. It's not uncommon on a hot summer day for the density altitude to be pushing 10000'. But any good canopy pilot should be ok. I mean look at Hooknswoop. He flies a VX 60 loaded at 3:1 here in CO and he's done ok with it so far (knock on wood).

I learned the "Density Altitude" lesson when I visited Colorado about 10 years ago! I was jumping at the Loveland/Ft.Collins airport, had a hard opening followed by hard/fast landing. I'm convinced that my ankle was saved by recent rains that made the ground soft. Hopefully my landing skills have improved a bit since then....
Thanks for the info and the reminder!

Skydive the Rockies

They are about an hour from Colorado Springs. They now have the Caravan permanently based there. They also have 2 206's...it's where I jump now because that's where I can get a ride to.

"Front Range Skydivers"

They're about an hour from Colorado Springs, they only have a 206 now. Yeah, it's the highest civilian dz in the US, actually about 6450'. It's got some great people too. They're a great dz too.

Steve is right about the high alt....you fly FAST! Enjoy the turf surfs...

We (Skydive The Rockies!) have the Caravan FULL TIME! In fact we operated it every single day last week! Also, we will run it with 8 jumpers any day of the year. If you need a weekday "turbine fix" call or email and we'll rock and roll!

Oh yea, our TWO other planes are BOTH Turbo 206's

They no longer have the Caravan. Just a 206 - Period!

Canuck, thanks for the help but please try to get the info strait... We have a hard enough time in this "gang like" environment.;)
