Extreme Vacation

Recommended Posts

I dont know if Im just getting too old, I dont know what the deal is. OK, so the idea was, 4 days vacation, first skydiving, followed by surfing. Two extreme sports on a four day vacation trip. Sounds wild.

The anxiety was tremendous. First jump on Friday was okay, then I was supposed to get on 8 and head to Cal. Second jump, got sick, high anxiety, felt sick the rest of the day. Kept thinking about catching waves after not having done it all winter. Got real, real moody and stayed that way all the way to Cal. I know I was real tired, lack of sleep, right before going to Eloy Thrus night, my next door neighbor comes out and wants some action, that got me about 3 hrs sleep that night. Do I want to go skydiving spend the whole time getting laid? Skydiving. On the former, been there, done that.

Next day, get up, wake up, wake up some more, get on the wetsuit, get the board, head out to Turmo for some practice before tomorrow. Waves look pretty violent, choppy conditions, doesnt look safe, adrenaline kicks in, anxiety turns on, nerves rattling like crazy. Heartbeat was so fast I had to wait a while before going out. It had been a long time, so Im out catching mostly whitewater as opposed to getting crushed, didnt get enough speed for a ride that day. Waves breaking near shore and breaking up early. Paddled out with the other surfers, suddendly, surfer comming towards me, wipes out, no leash, his board flies in mid air striaght towards my head nose first, in a split second threw my board aside and "karate chopped" his board on the underside just before it struck me in the forehead. REAL close call.

Beach party at Mission Beach that night with the other surfers, yea and Im talking all cool like, "dude, Im gonna rip tomorrow, ect", trying to get pumped up and just not ready for it. Next day, Mission beach, choppy as hell and even more fearsome, getting beaten up pretty bad like bricks hitting me in the face it seemed like. Anxiety tripling, but got a few short term rides before the board sank, not enough speed. Like hell I was going out there any furthur, dont have a death wish for this sport either. Getting real moody.

Next day, super choppy at Turmo, cold wind blowing through, nothing to catch on a shortboard unless you just like wasting your time, plenty of windsurfers out that day. No surfers in the area.

There are some skydiver/ surfers on the forum. Is this just a bad time for me? The anxiety, the moodiness, the low energy levels? Or is it that I need to seperate skydiving and surfing, like oil and water, they dont mix? Is two extreme sports one too much? Little confused right now, but at least I know I wont be doing anything for a while, Im out of money after this trip, with two MORE surfboards being shaped right now that I have to pay for next month. That makes four in the quiver.

The pic is all about me not wanting to take off on mount mother fucker, you can see why.

Shhhhitttt!!! Glad to be back at work.

I don't see the need to seperate them. I jump and surf myself and see them as two different things. Who knows, maybe its the long board talkin'. (9' board w/9" fin)

Take some time to "decompress" from the trip. We have all had bad days on the beach and likewise at the DZ. Both on the same trip is sure to bring you down a bit. Sorry dude!

Im thinking that too, both on the same trip. Cramming two extreme sports, I dont know if thats such a good idea, maybe concentrate first on one, then the other. Skydiving is pretty intense, then going to Californias' smash hitter waves, guess Im just not used to kicking that much adrenaline at one time.

As far as longboarding, if youre in Cal you gotta go through the same shit shortboarders go through to get out there, HOWEVER, I can tell you that longboards are a lot more difficult to manage than shortboards. You fuck up on a longboard and you get smashed in the face twice as hard, also less margin for error with a longboard. Difference is, you need to be moving very fast on a shortboard at take off otherwise you sink, requires more balance, more prone to diving on a low noserocker, better maneuverability. Managing it is a lot easier though, you need quite a bit of skill to deal with a longboard, especially 9'. I use Protek 4 3/4 fins, three in place, really good shit.

Let me add one thing to this thats on my mind. Surfing is totally badass in every form, but skydiving just totally kicks ass in every way I can think of. I wouldnt have said that about skydiving before I actually did it. Im really glad I found it even though it was all by chance. Sure its dangerous, like any other extreme sport, you gotta be aware, watch your back, and dont be slackin'.

The first thing I have understood at DZ.com to date.:S

Totally funny, yea its like he's almost got it down, now all he needs is a surfboard some laid back shades and a wave!

That reminds me, I was on the pick up zone with this blonde chick at Mission Beach, totally fucking hot, sitting on her patio reading some book. I didnt even want to let go of that, chick was fine boy. Couldnt shake her loose, dont know why, mustve been a really good book. I was ready to show her the real thing, if she only knew. Well, she lives there, maybe next time, although I hate Mission Beach cause it aint my spot. Make me scream baby, yea!!!

Ummm....ok The most fearsome thing I've seen at mission beach was a whacked out homeless guy playing superman on a shopping cart. Maybe those were real bricks and you didn't know it.:D

Were you there Sunday? They were slamming hard and it was complete shit. Must be why nobody there? When I say fearsome I mean its enough to make me uptight cause I dont like being slammed and from 20 ft apart. Once or twice is one thing, over and over again is bullshit. Surfing is riding lines all the way in, not taking off on whitewater on a 10 ft trip.

Mustve been skydiving that day???:D That was me down there cussing...

Naw, the most fearsome thing I saw was on Tuesday, when I asked a surfer at Turmo how it was out there? Now THAT was scary.

waves were glass at sunset cliffs today, caught around 10-15 NOOICCEE waves before I decided to ride one home.:P

Accelerate hard to get them looking, then slam on the fronts and rollright beside the car, hanging the back wheel at eye level for a few seconds. Guaranteed reaction- Dave Sonsky

Rub it in! Now that Im back in Phoenix. It always gets like that right when I leave. And you Calis are doing this on purpose arent you?B| Just because you dont like Zonies! Or you just like pissing Zonies off.

I would say Im gonna kick all your asses, problem is you all seem to know Karate. Its like there's a Karate place around every corner in California. Yall dont allow guns, but you all know Karate, and you fuck up the weather every time a Zonie wants to go surfing.

Talk about localism!!!

Sounds like you surf the waves the same way you surf dz.com :D

Relax, hang out, don't try to force it, let it take you where it may...

Aw, I just want to see those nice, beautiful lines come rolling in once again, something Ive been waiting for all winter. Why cant Cal just be nice to me, Im nice to it! Spend all that money on hotels, restaurants, local shapers, begging all those blondes for immediate sex:ph34r:

I like those blondes on rollerblades, skating down the boardwalk turning 360s, one of these days Im gonna get fast enough on that skateboard to catch up with them. One of these days...
