misskriss 0 #1 April 29, 2003 So, I am only blessed with the Standard 4 years of highschool Spanish and one year of Russian. Without having to go back to school or move out of the country, can anyone suggest a good language course either online or elsewhere. My daughters are starting to surpass me in Espanol and I want to be fluent before they are. I really can't afford to get a tutor right now either, so that is out of the question... Tasadin 0 #2 April 29, 2003 Hows about Lnguaphone, theyre always advertising on TV and claim to make you fluent in like 3 weeks or something?? "If everything seems under control, you're just not going fast enough."
BoobieCootie 0 #3 April 29, 2003 Have you tried the local library lately? You wouldn't not believe the amount of language learnign aids they carry. I find the most effective ones are those for children 4 feet tall.

wmw999 2,543 #5 April 29, 2003 If you can get a Spanish-language TV channel, try watching some of the shows, or even movies that have been dubbed. Soap operas in particular tend towards fairly slow, clear speech and simple plot lines. Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)
Lolie 0 #6 April 29, 2003 If you're near a college campus, you might be able to find a "Spanish table" that meets once every week or so at a restaurant to practice Spanish. It's free, and you'll usually find that most people are more than willing to practice speaking with anyone of any level. If that's still intimidating, you might be able to find a conversation partner. (Conversation partners are fun if you can find a native Spanish speaker that's learning English: speak English one week, and Spanish the next.) skydiverbrian 0 #7 April 29, 2003 Have you considered hiring a young, muscular, tan, Spanish-speaking pool boy? In a world full of people, only some want to fly... isn't that crazy! --Seal
CrazyIvan 0 #8 April 29, 2003 Like Wendy said: Tune in the Spanish-speaking channel and watch some soaps, true story, a coworker, got hooked on Spanish-TV soaps (because of the boobies galore ) and now he understands and speaks some Spanish, but if you really dedicate some time you'll learn very quickly, plus, you can practice with your daughters, that's a big plus. __________________________________________ Blue Skies and May the Force be with you. FallingILweenie 0 #11 April 29, 2003 I would say to be careful how much spanish you pic up from tv, if you really want to learn spanish properly.....just because it's not the highest quality spanish...It is a good way to get used to hearing conversational spanish at realistic speed though. Vance 0 #12 April 29, 2003 Try this web site www.studyspanish.com I got a lot of good use out of it even while I attended the Defense Language Institute in Montery. ¡Buena suerte! Vance
jraf 0 #13 April 30, 2003 Quote Have you considered hiring a young, muscular, tan, Spanish-speaking pool boy? Muscular? Will do, I have improved much since TuTu Tango. Tan? Yeah baby by all means! Young? OK we might have a problem there, but I have magic powersSpanish? Nada! Sadly nada! Kristen hired me already but from me she can learn Yiddish, German, Polish, Russian (I leave french out, but I am fluent) but no Spanish. Hence the request. I swear it's their favorite channel. I can't believe how much they've gained just from watching it in the mornings..
TheAnvil 0 #15 April 30, 2003 The PIMSLEUR Courses are both expensive and OUTSTANDING. Languages are my hobby and I can't name a better way of learning a language. Having had four years of HS Spanish you might want to start with their LEVEL II (buy it used off of Amazon). It IS the best out there. I used it to learn some Portuguese before I went down to Rio for Carnaval. When I got there, the only problem I had was people speaking to me extremely rapidly initially because they said I sounded native. PM me if you'd like for me to send you a tape or two of Level II (I have it, but am not finished yetBeers, Vinny Vinny the Anvil Post Traumatic Didn't Make The Lakers Syndrome is REAL JACKASS POWER!!!!!! BBKid 0 #17 April 30, 2003 If you really want to impress your kids, learn Latin. It makes learning virtually any Indo-european language easier (other than German), and you can understand a lot of other languages with no practise, if not speak them. Of course, I did study Latin for 7 years, so maybe this isn't the right timescale for ya! Nick --------------------------- "I've pierced my foot on a spike!!!"
