ebay parachute scam?

Recommended Posts

Found this i haven't heard of any of these "certifications" and how can you have F111 and zero-p all in the same material? Isn't that 2 different materials?

Sounds (and looks) like crap to me..

Emergency can strike at any time. Will you be prepared? Ships carry life boats... Buildings carry??? An affordable emergency escape parachute is now available. While others are blocking the stairway, you will have other means of escape. Intended for skyrise buildings. The Executive-Chute canopy cloth is F111 "zero porosity" rip stop nylon. The skirt is reinforces with 1" mil spec. nylon tape neatly wrapped and stitched with a precision four-needle machine. The attachment loop is covered with a Teflon sheath, to protect it from dangerous friction which may occur during deployment. High quality standards and materials enable this device to stay in working order for many years. The chute has been tested from as low as 125 feet. The deceleration and landing results were very acceptable, and survivable. This canopy holds the following certifications : UAV, AFNOR, DHV, SHV.

Dude just doesn't know what he's talking about.

That thing is teeeeeeny. There cannot be anything bigger than a 200sq ft canopy in there if it's square, and maybe 26' at the most if it's round.

Hell, I might get it. sounds like a perfect alternative for those damn expensive BASE rigs, especially since it's good down to 125 ft. Wow, what a deal.

F111 is low porosity.

On a tangential note, I'm waiting for the day some idiot tries to test the system and jump one of these for the heck of it. I'm betting he'll win a Darwin award and his heirs will successfully sue the manufacturer.

Edit: "sure" should have been "sue"

I don't think it's a scam. I have seen other manufacturer information about these "survival" parachutes before. I forget where I saw the info, but you have a hook on the wall for deployment, clip in, break the window, and jump:o

Now, if you're just on the 2nd or 3rd floor, THAT would Suck!!;)

Once the plane takes off, you're gonna have to land - Might as well jump out!!

Hookit - how smart is it to have a round canopy for jumping off buildings? Seems like you would want to actually be able to steer to avoid other buildings, find a half-way decent landing area, etc.

Don't know much about this subject, but heard about your recent adventure in SF.

I'm not saying jumpers shouldn't have a wee rig like this in their hi rise offices, but for whuffoes?
We chatted about this a longtime ago, just after 9/11 in fact. The general consensus was that peeps using this system would more likely be a nuisance, bogging down EMTs with minor sprains and ankle breaks etc.

It makes much more sense to provide people with a set of nomex coveralls, a smoke hood, a light stick, and some heat resistant gloves. Damn sight cheaper too.

As for rapelling down the side of a building, we already have fuckwit proof escape systems like this offshore.

I'm of the opinion that yeah jumpers COULD have a base rig if they worked on like the 100th floor or something but definetely NOT whuffos. Yeah then they can get out of the building and screw themselves up on landing.[:/]

And screw that repel device! I'm pretty sure the dudes talking bout a coil of climbing rope and a climbing harness. Although that to used in the wrong hands could screw you up as well.

"And screw that repel device!"

The donut thing came about after we had a big bad fire offshore on the Piper Alpha, some guys had to jump 240+ ft into the sea to escape. Now thats a long way to jump with no rope and no base rig.B|
But the boys had to make a choice, fly or fry.
You'll find that most climbing ropes don't really like being heated up that much, the tape used on the donuts is heat resistant, and you put it on like a diaper. I lost count of how many times I've seen people puzzling out how to put a climbing harness on.:S

Yep, we (the offshore industry in Aberdeen) lost 167 good guys in that one.:(
If you google Piper Alpha, you can find all sorts of information on it.
