Books to Be Re-Written: Russian Military Analyst

Here's somebody at the Moscow Times who isn't afraid to tell it like it is:

Russian generals were expecting another prolonged so-called non-contact war, like the one against Yugoslavia in 1999, in Afghanistan in 2001 or the first gulf war in 1991, when a four-day ground offensive was preceded by a 39-day air bombardment. It was believed that the Americans were afraid of close hand-to-hand encounters, they would not tolerate the inevitable casualties, and that in the final analysis they were cowards who relied on technical superiority. (all emphasis mine)

Looks like there are a lot of people who are starting to blink.

This is very true. I think the peacekeeping and nationbuilding tasks at hand will be quite difficult. However, I do think that we will see them through to the end - more so in Iraq than in Afghanistan, though I think we will do well there too.

How do y'all think the Saudi's and Jordanians will react to the eventuality of an American-backed democracy right next door? I think they won't be all that comfy with the idea.

These are going to be difficult and demanding times ahead,
any wrong move by the west will be exaggerated by Arab nationalist press organizations (just as our own do I suppose).
I think in the case of Iraq, an exemplary example must be made in the re-construction of its infrastructure and culture.
It is the only way of gaining trust and respect (if at all possible) in a land that has its own fair share of troubles.

I just hope it can be done with as little blood spilt as possible. [:/]

It ain't over yet though. [:/]

No, but the gist of the article was how dismayed the Russian military leadership is, given that they lost thousands taking Grozny, 1/10th the size of Baghdad.

Perhaps some good may come out of this,
the "hearts and minds" campaign may have had more effect than the tomahawks.
A little respect and sympathy go a long way sometimes.
I suppose tacticaly we will have to wait and see. [:/]
