Iraqi Children Released From Prison in Baghdad

Tell me again how it's just about the oil. I hope those fucking "Human Shields" realize they're responsible for this.

"'The children had been imprisoned because they had not joined the youth branch of the Baath party,' he alleged. 'Some of these kids had been in there for five years.'"

edit to add "f*ing human shields" remark

I just can't fathom the fact that the citizens are grabbing guns...

Thousands of Soldiers moving into the city and you pick up a gun????? I'd be looking for a little American flag - but that's just me:|

First of all- order, twisted as it was, is crumbling. In times like that, you probably feel better with a weapon of your own.
Second- their former oppressors are probably still around somewhere- better to be armed in case they meet.
Third- a foreign army is about to march into their city, claiming to be their liberator- still, you never know.
Fourth- Perhaps they're preparing for the possibility that they won't like the new regime...
And I'm sure they have more reasons.

So honestly - if you saw Chinese soldiers marching down your street, shooting people, your first thought would be to find a Chinese flag, rather than defend yourself and your family against them?

Trouble is, if they pick up a weapon, by Geneva Convention, they're fair game.

How tragic it would be for an Iraqi citizen, arming himself to defend his family from the chaos and looting, only to be targeted by the USMC instead. [:/]

I'm just guessing here, but most of them probably aren't familiar with that convention...and if you're not aware of a legal rule, you can not be punished for breaking it. At least it works that way with laws.
But I agree- it's quite possible that tragic things will continue to happen in this war[:/].

That's kinda exactly my point.....

No Bill, I would not go looking for a Chinese Flag. However, I would probably try and keep my family out of harms way, as best I could...

I don't really know. When they were yelling at me in Basic and telling me I was Whale Dung, they didn't review what to do with my wife and kids 20 years after I got out of the Military....

Again, I don't live there, but the point was meant to be that citizens grabbing guns would make it even more difficult for our soldiers to figure out how best to do their job.

They are liberators. Wake up and admit it.

That's wonderful that those children were freed. But I am really beginning to look at our news sources as being almost as unrealistic as Iraq's minister of dis-information.

Latest news I've seen is about the female that was captured and rescued. Everyone was making a big deal about how she fought off her attackers even with multiple bullet and stab wounds. Turns out, she wasn't shot or stabbed.

Not to take away anything from her ordeal, but the level of mis-information coming out on our side of the propaganda battle is leading me to not believe anything about anything.

I think he meant that they don't know for sure. Do you wake up sweating at night afraid a liberal is hiding under your bed? :P

A prime example of not being able to see any other point of view... He was not saying that the US forces are not liberators... he was saying that it is rational to fear that they MAY NOT be liberators if you are a scared Iraqi citizen who has been lied to all your life...

Whether this is in fact a war of liberation has been subject to much debate, and there is no need to revisit it now.

Point is... everything is not black and white, and it is perfectly normal that the Iraqis might be suspicious of the US.

Yes, but I think that the exaggeration about her injuries was largely due to the fog of war, rather than to an overactive imagination or a deliberate campaign of disinformation.

Besides, her injuries were exaggerated, but it appears her valor was not. B|

Uh. No.

"Sorry Officer, I wasn't aware that it was illegal to in your country. I'm sorry, it won't happen again."

Somehow I don't think that's going to fly.

Actually, it would fly- at least in my country. If your defense can prove that you weren't aware of the law when you broke it- you're free to go.

Geneva Convention aside, the troops are governed by the ROE.

I still wonder exactly what the ROE are over there. Back in the day, I had plenty of AKs haphazardly yet purposefully sticking out the windows of vehicles pointed at us. The only thing you could do was cover them and make eye contact so they know you're more ready to play than they are, while their fingers rested on the triggers. The smirks those little fucks had on their faces were incredible. On the flipside, while taking fire from a line of bushes, we could not return fire because we could not "make clear visual contact" with the person trying to kill us.

There is no easy way to do what these guys have to do. Just sit down, shut up and hold on. It might get bumpy.

You might want to double check that before you try it in court. I can't imagine any country that expects you to know every law on the books and will let you off if you don't. That would, in essence, mean only those who went to law school could be held liable.

I would do the same.

I've seen quite a few people on this board discuss in great detail how they would use their guns to defend their families; I find myself wondering if they would submit to a chinese "army of liberation" - or do the same as many of the people of Iraq are doing.

update: after much wrangling it was found lynch WAS shot...after all the crap about "she wasnt shot" circulated i found a page off cnn somewhere says yeah they found one or two low-caliber entrance and exit wounds, fairly easy to miss on first inspection and treatment for the more obvious damage i.e. broken arms/legs. either way, pfc lynch RULES the iraqis must have a hard time dealing with the fact that to them, women are property, to US, they're badass warriors. "wait a minute....they sent their WOMEN after us?"
damn right. our women are tougher than your women. lets hear it for badass american warrior chicks. pretty, durable, smart and one hell of a warrantee.
