Sacked Marine Colonel?

Recommended Posts

I've been hearing snippets about a Marine Colonel being relieved of his command.

Anyone know any more about this?

David

You heard correctly. Nobody's talking about why yet. It does happen. A CO can step on his dick in many ways, leading to sacking. Few of them are combat-related.

It's news, but it's not unheard of. Just ask GENs McClellan or Hooker. B|

Anyone hear of an HK?

We were looking at getting HK-21's, but someone said either they stopped making them or the company was going out of business. They were high on our list of toys, though. We're still using Robar RC-50 .50 cal's and looking around.
Shit happens. And it usually happens because of physics.

The word is now out. Apparently, he wasn't being "aggressive enough", and the US Army (3rd Armored Div) reached Baghdad first.

You're kidding right?

Tell me they never sacked him because the army got there first. Have you got a source/link to the story?

David

Of course! How silly of me not to link it.

"The unexpected, April 4th, removal of the commander of one of the three U.S. Marine regiments advancing on Baghdad has been explained. The division commander expected much more aggressive leadership from Colonel Joe Dowdy, the commander of the 1st Marine Regiment. It was Dowdy's first combat command and he favored a more careful approach that minimized friendly casualties. The marine riflemen under his command knew and appreciated this. But the culture of the marines is one of more aggressive action, as least according to Dowdy's boss. This situation may have been made worse by the fact that the U.S. Army 3rd Mechanized division was the first into Baghdad. While no one officially spoke of any "competition", the issue was tossed about jokingly, or seriously, by pundits, reporters and some of the troops over the last two weeks."

So this guy actually got the sack for giving a shit about friendly fire incidents?

Maybe this explains why the US military is getting a reputation for being trigger happy nutters in some quarters.

I think it's a Rem 700 in the new MacMillan stock. I believe USMV snipers have gone to 300 Win Mag.

When was this, since as of about a year ago (last time I had the chance to talk to a buddy of mine who's a scout/sniper), they still had their bench made rifles based on the Rem 700.

It looks like either a Rem 700 or a Winchester M40 in a custom MacM stock and a "special purpose" scope mount. The action looks too short to be a 300 WM.
