wmw999 2,457 #2 March 31, 2003 It doesn't look like it; there are pictures, and it's on the Tribune website too. I guess Daley figured that if it was already done, and he had enough power, it's OK. Better to ask forgiveness than permission if you think it's really right, and all that. Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. This is kinda funny (well, not funny haha)...my brother went off on some rant about Daley a little over a week ago. AggieDave 6 #11 March 31, 2003 Hopefully the taxiway is long enough they can just take off from that, to get their planes out of there. If I was a pilot with a plane there, I would have already talked to my lawyer, my buddies with planes and had them to talk to their lawyer, and filed against the city, naming the mayor in the suit.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." diverdriver 5 #15 March 31, 2003 QuoteSomeone please tell me this is a cruel April Fools joke... http://www.aopa.org/ We now have the "Ghestapo" in the US and they are called the TSA. Daley is a wanna be ghestapo. This was really poor. We watched his news conference about it and he looked all disheveled and he was moving behind the podium very nurvously. His speach was very curt and he claims it's for security of downtown. Yet the tower of Meigs field gave much more protection of downtown than if it were not there. If a plane did not contact them coming into the downtown area they would have much more of a heads up than anyone will now. Now.....there will be no one watching planes coming to the downtown area. Daley got his presious TFR around downtown up to 3,000 feet. But I guarantee that a C-182 loaded with explosives could get into the downtown area before anyone could blink. Daley has done nothing useful and only destroyed millions of dollars in taxpayer money. miked10270 0 #16 March 31, 2003 QuoteIs Mayor Daley a crazyman? One wonders how crazy (or motivated) he is. I must admit that my only experience of Meigs is from FS2000/FS2002. My first thought is WHY??? My first method in looking for motivation is to "seek the gain", what's in it for Daley? "Homeland Security"? Nah... Meigs has been there a while, and just 'cos it's the MS default airfield ('cos one of the programmers learned to fly from Meigs) isn't an excuse - after all, you can go to ANY airfield in MSFS. The French have a saying - "Cherchez la Femme", but in this case, "Cherchez L'Argent" may be more apt. I suspect that Daley may have an "interest" in another, similar airfield. Then again, Maybe I'm just a cynical, suspicious cop, and experience tells me that it's not the motivation that changes in fraud, just the scale. Mike. wildblue 7 #17 March 31, 2003 Chris makes a good point - he claims it was in the name of homeland security, but actually he hurt the security of Chicago by the tower now no longer being there. And there are planes there - they said they'll be able to use the taxi way later in the week to get out, or the city will pay to get them shipped out. EDIT: most pilots probably know, Daley has actually wanted to shut down Meigs long before 9/11. They had a "Gentleman's Agreement" (that was supposed to be codified at some point) that Meigs would stay open until 2026 if he got his support to expand O'Hare. It looks like "Homeland Security" was just a good excuse to make way for Daley Park.it's like incest - you're substituting convenience for quality

What, did you think that 'flight restrictions' would stop terrorists who want to destroy Chicago? pilotdave 0 #21 March 31, 2003 QuoteNow.....there will be no one watching planes coming to the downtown area. Well, I have no clue how much "protection from above" they have in chicago, but I know here in the DC area, the skies are constantly being watched by an AWACS plane...somewhere. They're designed for watching for low altitude, transponderless targets. If it's flying around here, they see it. Stopping it is another story. The idea that the TFR or the closing of Meigs has any effect on security is a joke. In about 3 months I'm graduating and moving to CT, where the skies are nice and clear. Can't wait to get out of the airpspace here. Course I'll be flying about 15 miles outside New York's messed up airspace, but outside is outside.
