"Where do they get young men like this?”
Martin Savidge of CNN, embedded with the 1st Marine battalion, was talking with 4 young Marines near his foxhole this morning live on CNN. He had been telling the story of how well the Marines had been looking out for and taking care of him since the war started. He went on to tell about the many hardships the Marines had endured since the war began and how they all look after one another.
He turned to the four and said he had cleared it with their commanders and they could use his video phone to call home.
The 19 year old Marine next to him asked Martin if he would allow his platoon sergeant to use his call to call his pregnant wife back home whom he had not been able to talk to in three months. A stunned Savidge who was visibly moved by the request shook his head and the young Marine ran off to get the sergeant.
Savidge recovered after a few seconds and turned back to the three young Marines still sitting with him and asked which one of them would like to call home first, the Marine closest to him responded with out a moments hesitation “ Sir, if is all the same to you we would like to call the parents of a buddy of ours, Lance Cpl Brian Buesing of Cedar Key, Florida who was killed on 3-23-03 near Nasiriya to see how they are doing”.
At that Martin Savidge totally broke down and was unable to speak. All he could get out before signing off was “Where do they get young men like this?”.

Nice. Although I don't think Marines, or any other soldiers, are exceptional people per se- more likely it's the circumstances that bring out the best in them. Too bad those same circumstances also have a way of bringing out the worst.

My observation, mankind is at its best, when things are at their worst.

Those that I've seen at their best have walked many parts of life, through many different situations. I have no benefit of experience of combat, though I cannot imagine anything more frightening, and I hope that I would conduct myself the way it is described in bodypilot's post.
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

This is one of the many reasons I feel lost since I retired from the Army...............................some of my brothers are still serving and I feel I should be with them...................they are the creme of the crop. God be with all of them. You will find that these men will fight for each other - not necessarily for country as much as each other. I will never be the same.

Sorry, but I feel such sadness.

I think that's because having a large common problem allows us to focus on our similarities, more than our differences. You keep hearing "we're all skydivers," right? Well, with a common problem, we're all fighting it.

I'd hate for the US to be that common problem.

Unfortunately, I just came across a message on another discussion group that says that the Savidge piece was a hoax:
"This was acknowledged as a hoax today unfortunately.
From Best of the Web Today, http://www.opinionjournal.com/best/

<We should have known it was too good to be true. CNN informs us that the story we noted Wednesday about correspondent Martin Savidge was a hoax.>>"
You will have to scroll down a screen or two to find the "Homer Nods" quote.

But it was the US that designated him as the common problem. I wonder who's next in line for that title?

According to Body Pilot in another thread in dz.com, apparently it is Saudi Arabia... i believe the thinking was "Well we're getting Sadaam because he didnt have anything to do with 9/11 (although Bodypilot says he did but couldnt back that up) so then we will go after Saudi Arabia who do have stronger links with the 9/11 atrocities..

Hey i just remember these things...
