The live news guy on the video said the authorities told him what was on the note.

the kid was "upset about treatment of muslims in theis country" and that he did not want the "US to get involved in another war like vietnam".

Wow!!!, what a hero huh?, so he killed himself because he was UPSET, and this was a protest, so, it's more important to do something like that for someone who don't give a rat's ass, what about his parents? his family? looks like they don't count. LOSER!!!

People from the 70's will remember a pic...
It was a buddhist priest protesting the Viet Nam war by sitting in the lotus position, pouring a 2 gallon can of gas over his head, and lighting it... and sitting there.

The pic of that guy just sitting there is so surreal. I have remembered it for 30 years.

I think I would put that in the SERIOUSLY PISSED OFF category......:D What a whacko...

He is still revered among Buddhists today. There are a lot of Christians who won't go to Easter sunrise service when it is too chilly. Little more committment here. (Of course, Easter was originally not a Christian festival, so...)

but blind comittment doesn't accomplish much.

Don't think so?

30 years later, this man is still remembered for his action and his commitment. He is still revered in some circles. His commitment to something was demonstrated by self-immolation, and at least two people see that...Happythoughts and I.

It is a serious statement to his convictions, and his actions have served to stimulate conversation 30 years after he died. That's a serious reverberation, don't you think? I honestly doubt Spidermandude will be discussed next year, let alone 5, 10, 15, 30 years from now...but I'll bet children 10 years old today will see the monk's photo some day and discuss it.

Hey - have a great day!

3 people agree, me too!
Its a horrific yet very powerful image from that conflict, it ranks alongside the little girl running from the napalm.

Thought provoking indeed.

Powerful statement yes....just doesn't fit in with my philosophical agenda. A friend's grandfather once told me something that has stuck with me. He was about 80 some years old. Absolutely hated his wife. They hated each other so that he actually lived in their garage instead of the house. One day he decided he had had enough. He took a .22 pistol...placed it under his chin and pulled the trigger. His next thought....Shit that FREAKIN HURT!! The bullet actually went through his skull but in between the two halves of his brain. Came right out the top of his head. He went to the hospital and made a full recovery. His thoughts on this. Next time I'll shoot that bitch instead of myself. ;) Strange story but a good philosophy I think.

Was it THAT obvious? :D There was a guy in my last Squadron in the Air Force. He was some part Thai and had taken up Budhism as a religion. He was FREAKIN the day we did "survival" training and had students clubbing rabbits. :D

If Mary Jane dumped you, wouldn't you want to jump from a tall building ? ;)

Nope, Mary Jane is a slut (I heard that from Buster Brown & his ugly dog):P

The point of my thread was the wierd news coverage. That was a major event for this city and coverage was not complete...as is often the case. It happened 2 blocks from me..LOSER!!!>:(

Aha, I think he was distracted from pushing on to the summit by the sight of some drunken geezer walking his dog in his underwear...? ;)

There is an article in the Chronicle about all the news coverage... who showed what... It is funny, they all say the management company would not return their calls... it was actually the media that would not accept the management company's calls... It is also funny that the TV stations always pick the dumbest people to put on the air... "I don't understand why they didn't evacuate the building, I was so scared..." Idiots!>:(
