SpeedRacer 1 #1 March 24, 2003 It has been said that the price of freedom is blood. Folks, however you feel about the rationale of this war, we should all support our troops. I'd like to encourage everyone who can to go to the local Red Cross & donate blood. I was told that approximately half of the blood will be for use by the military. <>> Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------

Michele 1 #3 March 24, 2003 I did, about 2 weeks ago now. I'll do so again as soon as I am able, which will be about 42 days from now. I even got a friend who'd never done it to give her first pint....she didn't take too well to the beer concept, though.Ciels- Michele ~Do Angels keep the dreams we seek While our hearts lie bleeding?~

billvon 3,072 #6 March 24, 2003 I donate pretty much every time I'm eligible. Unfortunately before long I won't be eligible any more; it's just a matter of time before they decide something I've done/somewhere I've been now disqualifies me. The UK thing came close; I spent a few weeks there for work. Interesting fact: Extra blood donated after 9/11 for the victims: 600,000 units Blood needed by 9/11 victims: 260 units Blood discarded: 200,000 units Let's hope this war results in such a low demand for blood. Keith 0 #7 March 25, 2003 I'd like to, but I can't 'cause I'm a homo. I used to donate when ever they called (I have a rare blood type so they'd call when they needed me to donate rather than risk wasting it). Of course that was in the late 70's and very early 80's. It's a great idea though. Everyone should call their local blood bank and find out if they are low.Keith Don't Fuck with me Keith - J. Lindsey 0 #8 March 25, 2003 Hey Keith....I heard the Red Cross was gonna stop discriminating against people based on their sexual orientation.....which would be really cool, imho.... I've not heard anything about lifting the ban on Brits yet though.... :( Peace~ Lindsey-- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. Keith 0 #9 March 25, 2003 Thanks for the support Lindsey, but I don't see this as discrimination. Sometimes we need to look out for the greater good. Some viruses have long incubation times before they can be detected. In instances like this I believe erring on the side of caution.Keith Don't Fuck with me Keith - J. wmw999 2,538 #10 March 25, 2003 I'd have to say I agree. I can't donate either; I had hepatitis when I was 11. They said that if it was before 11 you can donate. My doctor said that, frankly. someone who needs blood is less likely to be able to tolerate a little oops. gemini 0 #11 March 25, 2003 I think it is very important to note that Bill's numbers indicate that 399,740 blood units were used by someone. Now that is an impressive number. Guess I'm a glass half-full guy! Blue skies, Jim

RedBull 0 #13 March 25, 2003 This post in Safety and training dicusses the blood donation topic. I seems that plasma donation is safer, since no red blood cells are lost. I gave blood often before I started skydiving, but never plasma. Anyone donated plasma before? What's involved? Is it much different from giving whole blood? AggieDave 6 #14 March 25, 2003 Plasma doesn't go to help hospitals and such, it's sold to corporations for testing. That's why you get paid to donate plasma. Go donate blood, real blood, that is whats needed!--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."

Lindsey 0 #16 March 25, 2003 Hey Keith....I don't see it as discrimination either.... I understand (and I'm trying to pull stuff from the recesses of my memory here) that it has to do with current risk factors for HIV and that there are better ways to screen for behavioral risk than to create a blanket rule that keeps gays from donating blood. I wish my recollection was a little better here.... Peace~ Lindsey-- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged.
