Rdutch 0 #1 March 22, 2003 Damn If I didn't have bad luck I would have no luck at all. Today I had a cutaway. Cool footage Mike miyer shot perfect video of it on a hop and pop. Then he caught my freebag (Thankyou Mike) and followed my main. I tried to follow my main but on a PDR106 it wasnt happening so I landed far away. Anyway my main lands Mike films where it went and run's to get it. Upon reaching where it should have been (big park right in front of some trailor) he sees some guy running into his van carrying it and driving off, then he ask's the homeowner about it and he says "What canopy" Luckily he filmed this cause his camera was still on, and some guy was walking his dogs, he asked him did you see a canopy, and the guy says "Yes they just said hey look a parachute and the picked it up and hauled ass with it, it was the guys that live there and they were driving a black Van". That was also recorded, Soon after my cool friends calming me down from going over and having a "PERSONAL" talk with them I called the police and luckily had a very nice Police woman, she went over to inform them of the felonius nature of their crime, and that there was witnesses and Video and that if they didn't choose to return the canopy they are responsible and would go to jail for felony theft. So I am hoping that the Losser's friend will call him and let him know that he's busted and to give me my canopy back. Oh yeah and to add to that he had his house decorated with canopies, must be nice for all us skydivers to just drop $1500 wall decorations near his house, I did let the officer know that their is Serial#'s on those and she could check on them, I hope one of them is reported stolen. Was about to land close to it only to watch a guy in a pick up truck stop grab it and take off, Because of the oblique angle he couldn't see the guys plates. Now thats a nightmare! And since it is a public park then he has to have a boss somewhere so I will find him and talk to him. It's kinda stupid to go to jail over something that landed in front of your house, and there were whitnesses and stuff. Oh yeah someone asked yeah Deland, north east side near all the houses, actually right at the entrance of the sports complex. And Im just about to call the nice Officer and let her know that there are serial #'s on all the parachutes on his wall and they might have been reported missing/stolen. riggerrob 643 #17 March 22, 2003 This reminds me of a couple of times thieves broke into DZs and stole canopies. The first time, the thief made the mistake of bragging to a first jump student about the canopy stapled to his ceiling. The student reported it to his instrucotr, etc. By the time that mis-guided thief was finished, he had paid for a line kit, some patches and picked all the weeds off the runway at Beiseker. More recently, a thief broke into a hangar at Pitt Meadows and stole seven parachutes. Later that week he tried to sell them to a retired skydiver who is also a member of a group of motorcycle enthusiasts who prefer to remain nameless. The motorcycle enthusiast made it clear that he and his buddies did not want be get involved with petty larceny. Six of the seven rigs returned to the DZ that evening. A few months later, a drunk offered to sell the last stolen rig to one of our senior jumpers. Dave called the cops who replied "Do you mean the guys we cited for public drunkeness an hour ago?" The cops know who the thieves are, we know who the thieves are and we know the serial numbers of the stolen gear and we are just waiting for an opportunity to retrieve the last rig. Reminds me of the time an Elsinore jumper drove into town for lunch and a local stole his parachute out of his car. The local made the mistake of driving over to the DZ and trying to sell the rig. skycat 0 #18 March 22, 2003 This is part of the reason I made a really nice Customer Database for our Loft/Skydive the Rockies Loft. It not only has all the customer information, but it also has all the serial numbers of reserves, containers, AADs, and in some cases mains(if we worked on them or had to open the D-bag). I know way to many jumpers who don't know their serial numbers and if something like this happened to them they would be SOL when reporting it to the police.Fly it like you stole it! Location of the data panel on containers vary, but they are usually on or near the pocket that holds your data card - check your owner's manual if you can't find it on yours. Cypres s/n's are on the main unit inside the reserve container. A good rigger will note s/n's for the container, reserve and Cypres on the packing data card when s/he assembles the rig. Make a list of your s/n's - and don't keep that list in your gear bag! I have one in my important papers file; not a bad idea to have multiple lists "just in case" (maybe one at work or in a safety deposit box too). Pictures of each item and copies of invoices from each purchase can be very helpful in putting together either a police report or an insurance claim. Logbooks - I had a bag full of skydiving equipment stolen out of my car in the past. Luckily I found my jumpsuit and logbook (they kept everything else). My current logbook has not only my name, address and both home and work phone numbers in mine, but also - in big letters - "LARGE REWARD OFFERED! IF FOUND PLEASE RETURN TO:" Gear is replacable; the memories in my logbooks aren't. I learned something new about this today, Performance Design's laser codes all canopies. So even if they cut the label off you can still find the SN inside the canopy.
