The mother of my son's friend is trying to get me to buy paintball equipment so they can play together this summer. The boys will be 12, and to me that seemed a little young. I always thought it was more of an adult game because it is easy to get hurt. Am I right or wrong?

Wrong.....

lots of kids play..i've seen as young as 11 with there parents there of course...the key is supervision and regulation of the speed of there markers...just make sure they wear sweatshirts or something heavier like that...to ease up on the bruises...other than that...it's alot of fun. I started playing at 13...and I'm 29 now...so that was WAYYY back in the day...

No problem with letting the kids do this an DRE ah.

At least you know what they are doing, when they are doing it, and where they are. Beats a bunch of other options, doesn't it?

That said, GET THROAT PROTECTION! Don't think about it, DO IT! Masks are standard, but by far the biggest hazard is low shots to the adams apple area.

Damn! So you were using those little 12g CO2 cartridges, weren't you? Stick a 10-shot tube in, maybe shoot 50 feet if you're lucky?
They're still useful for side-arms I guess! :)

Yeah, you can get hurt doing anything. I fractured my leg playing paintball once! :D There's probably a few places around you to go, you can rent equipment there. Check out the field and how they run the place, see if you trust them to watch out for your young ones.

No kidding... that shit hurts there too!

The boys just want to go to the woods by the house with their friends. If I were to let him go, what are the basics I would need to buy and about how much does all of this cost?

Go play with them. You'll have fun, and it might curb the stupidest things they'll think of.

Played Semi Pro for a short time (It was about the same time I was starting skydiving-guess which one won?)

I've still got all my crap, 'cause I like to play a little walk on rec once in awhile, for kicks. I'm thinking about bringing a little bit with to Rantoul this year (for their arena). Nothing special, no need to humiliate anyone, just a Spyder TL, Remote system, and downgrade it back to co2.

I think I would get the old, "moooom, I'm not a baby anymore. None of the other moms are coming!' Although, who knows the joy it might give him to shoot me. It might make up for all those times I made him clean his room. :P

You'll probably want to take them to an actual field. Unless they have a lot of friends, it'll probably get boring. The fields also provide refs, can refill your tank, and crono the markers (to make sure they aren't shooting too fast and can hurt someone) You can also just rent gear the first few times, make sure they actually like it before you dump $200+ into a setup.
BTW - if you buy a Brass Eagle marker, I will come spank you myself.
Wait.. you might like that. Umm.. I will force you into a RW suit and take pictures!

RevJim made some good suggestions. Tippman also makes some good markers. My personal opinion is the Tippmans are a little more rugged - 12 years olds can be hard on stuff.

I played a lot of semi pro as well and put a lot of $ in it. In the long run i could have bought a new rig with the works for as much as I spent. Wife says pick one or the other. I think it is we all know where that is going. You could get them started for about 150 all together

Other posters are correct. Without a chronograph to gauge muzzle velocity for safety, naughty folks have been known to crank the pressure up to dangerous levels. Better to have them someplace supervised.

Absolutely true. Also, there are a LOT more 12-year-olds (and, even cooler, 14 and 15-year-olds!) at paintball fields.
