Canuck278 0 #1 March 12, 2003 Hey, a quick question for anyone in Washington or who knows of DZ's in the state. I am looking at getting posted in the US in Washigton state and wondering if there are any DZ's around Whidbey Island? Drive south from NAS Whidbey to the ferry. Drive onto ferry. Ride ferry across Northern Sound to Mukilteo. Drive off ferry. Drive to hwy 526 going East. Go to I-5. Go North to Hwy 2 Take Hwy 2 to Snohomish. Go South thru town. Cross Snohomish River. Enter Harvey Field parking lot. Take gravel ring road on North side of field. Park. Get out of car. Walk 150 feet South to clubhouse. Open door. Go thru door. Close door. Walk South another 15 feet. Turn left. You're at the manifest desk. freeflyguy 0 #3 March 12, 2003 If you join Whidbeys flying club, I will fly you to Kapowsin. Nice planes, they just don't let us non Mil types borrow em. ---------------------------- bzzzz
sdctlc 0 #4 March 12, 2003 If your going to be on Whidbey than you will need to get off the island to jump. You can go the Clinton-Mulkieto Ferry on the South end of the island and that will kick out near Everett, which is close to Skydive Snohomish http://www.skydivesnohomish.com/. Same ferry and a ~2 hour drive south will get you to Kapowsin http://www.skydivenet.com/kapowsin/index.htm. Head north off of the island towards Anacortes then east to the highway and you can hit some "norh o da border" DZ's Abbotsford http://www.vancouver-skydiving.bc.ca/homepage.html and Pitt Meadows http://www.pacificskydivers.bc.ca/index.html Both are fairly close to the border up in Vancouver, B.C. If you take the Port Towensend-Keystone Ferry it will put you on the Olympic pennisulla and about a 1 to 1.5 hour drive will get you to Blue Skies in Bremerton http://www.blueskies-skydiving.com/. Assuming your are talking about going to NAS Whidbey then you are probably going to be closest to the Keystone-Pt Townsend ferry. The closest DZ will be Snohomish or Blue Skies. For ease of travel, going on the Keystone ferry might be the way to get to Kapowsin as well i.e. avoid going through Seattle traffic. Drawback is the Keystone ferry is not as often as some of the other ferries in the area. Basically You are not looking at a 20 min drive to a DZ but there are Dropzones to be had! Good Luck and Hope to see you jumping in the NW Scott C."He who Hesitates Shall Inherit the Earth!"

Very clever of you, round-eye...That scene was shot in the same location (actually, the ferry for the San Juans), so I thought I'd be cute. brucewayne 0 #7 March 17, 2003 Of all the dropzones in Washington, Kapowsin is the only DZ with a full time super twin otter and Grand caravan. I don't know if that means anything to you but to some people that makes a difference. I know I would rather jump at a dz that has bigger, better aircraft that can get you to altitute as much as you can manifest and afford. Plus the extra altitude is nice for jumping. The people there are great too. It may be a bit of a drive for you but well worth it.

Still, a turbo DZ is a turbo DZ, and Kapowsin's the only full-time turbo DZ within sane driving distance."The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat." brucewayne 0 #9 March 18, 2003 Mark, there are lots of people that travel a long way to get here every weekend. Most just spend the weekend here to make it worth their while. I am lucky and live close but I think I would make the hike if I were faced with the choice.

brucewayne 0 #14 March 18, 2003 You just have to be patient, I was out there all weekend and got some jumps in and was out that way working today and the weather hasn't changed for the past three days. You just have to be willing to put in the time if you want to get the jumps. There were times this weekend where we could have got off Otter loads if we had the people out there. Oh well, such is life in The Great North West. When we do have the nice weather and clear skies it just simply can't be beat!

You're right - given the distance to be covered, you'd have to make a weekend of it to make it worth your while. In my case, it's only 66 miles, so I can make a day of it. Somebody coming from Whidbey NAS would have a long trip to make both ways."The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat."

You never know, if it is a blue ski day, I have been on the Otter many times. They will ususlly fire it up, if there are a couple folks that want to do a tandem. I painted the dz that summer too, I was always getting alltitude on "closed" days. Man, that paint job took a LONG time.As far as Whiby NAS, I am going to be living 20 miles from it, so carpool with me. Or, Get me one of their planes, and I will fly. Serious. ---------------------------- bzzzz
