aneblett 0 #2 March 15, 2003 I heard that that stuff is dangerous and only crazy people do it Age S.E.X. party #2 ..It is far worse to live with fear, than to die confronting it.
MC208B 0 #3 March 15, 2003 Yeah, I used to fly them in the late 70's. 2nd generation gliders (slightly less deadly than 1st gen) My future X wife wouldn't let me buy an emergency parachute (was carried on a pouch on the front of the harness, ya grabbed it and threw it away from the glider, sounds crappy but they worked!). I lived in Sheridan, WY then and was taking off a 2,000 foot turnout in the road and thermaling up another 1-2K feet. Bumpy, exciting ride up! Sometimes I would follow a hawk to find the thermals, couldn't afford a variometer either No emergency rig, no more hang gliding for me Modern hang gliders are pretty safe and very high performing compared to then. I'm an old fart now and to lazy to pick them up and run off the cliff DOOR!!!!

KawiZX900 0 #6 March 15, 2003 when i've got an extra 5 or 6 grand lying around, i'll let you know what it's like to fly an Atair glider off of Torrey Pines Accelerate hard to get them looking, then slam on the fronts and rollright beside the car, hanging the back wheel at eye level for a few seconds. drenaline 0 #7 March 16, 2003 what are the types of courses for hang gliding? or is there only one the tandem hang gliding? HISPA 21 www.panamafreefall.com
skydiverbrian 0 #8 March 16, 2003 I took some classes at Kitty Hawk, NC when I was in high school. Had lots of fun. Broke my arm during a crash landing. Skydiving's proven safer so far. In a world full of people, only some want to fly... isn't that crazy! --Seal
dterrick 0 #9 March 16, 2003 I was just on a visit to SF - all I saw in that area were para-gliders ... spooky seeing people stuck "on final" but it lopoked fun just the same. LAter in the trop I saw a troupe of hang gliders 1/2 hour South of Half Moon Bay - even freakier still ... yes it's on my list ... someday Dave QuoteWhen I was a kid I used to watch the hang gliders that flew off the cliffs at the beach on the South end of(I think) Ocean Beach in San Francisco.Anybody ever fly one ? Altough I'm only one year older then my rig....

I did a tandem down there. It was pretty cool. You get piggy back on the instructor and you're attached to the back of a pickup with 1000' cable on a spool. He floors it down the run way and you go up like a kite. When you get to 1000' they unhook the cable and you fly it. Then the instructor lands it for you. Was pretty fun, but didn't "grab me" like skydiving.
wmw999 2,446 #12 March 17, 2003 I did a tandem a couple of years ago. My son and I went to Brazil, and we hang-glided off a mountain/cliff in Rio de Janeiro. Obviously we were simply passengers... As a tourist attraction, it was awesome. As something to do regularly, not in Houston. Freeway overpasses are our most notable topological features. Do what?? Your future x wouldn't let you get a parachute for it??? Sounds like she wanted you dead man -- or is that why she is an ex?
