Got Me A Doggie

Recommended Posts

Picked up a male Beagle at the County Animal Shelter today. He is approximately a year old.....just beautiful. The dog listens well, let me give him a bath and loves everyone in the house. His disposition is perfect. I'm very excited about having him. The rascal can't seem to get enough water and I think I can pretty much attribute that to some "dehydration". The only "problem" is, that he doesn't think twice about cocking his hound leg and pissing on things. Two things.......the dog is either not house broken or is possibly staking his new territory.

His behavior and "understanding" of what I tell him leaves me no doubt that he once belong to a "decent" home and that he maybe housebroken, given his age also. If he is, is what he's doing (pissing) every chance he gets normal as he is in new surroundings?

I just moved into a new house and it took me about three weeks to stop doing that. My wife hated it. I feel better now.

As a condition of the contract with the county to adopt "Buddy", I have to have him neutered.......might do the trick or help?

ya, it should do the trick, but i don't know from experience, only from what i've heard. i have always had female dogs from as far back as i can remember.

Smack him in the mouth with a rolled up newspaper after he does his business but only after putting his nose in it. Don't smack him with your bare hand.

Although that will work, the dog will resent you and/or the newspaper someday. Not to mention that rubbing his nose in his mess is inhumane. The best way to stop him from doing it, is to catch him in the act, tell him NO! and then lead him outside and praise him when he does his business. Dogs forget things really quick. Even after 30 seconds if you punish him, he will wonder what the hell that was for and resent you for it.

As far as chopping off his balls in hopes that it will cure his marking.. I wouldn't count on it. He's a boy, and he's past the stage that neutering him will cure him of that. IF done early (6 mos) then it might prevent that becoming habit forming. Cut off his nuts now and he'll still piss on things to mark it, just catch him in the act to prevent him from doing it in the future. The only thing neutering him now will do, is calm him down a bit, and make him less "frisky"

I got Fox from the pound at about 9 months to a year and it took her about 3 weeks to potty train. Depending on his situation before you got him he may not have been an inside dog.

Bascially you have to treat him like a little puppy and start potty training from scratch. Walk him a lot, keep him in a crate when he can't be supervised, and give him lots of love and attention. Just remember he doesn't speak english, so your actions speak louder than words. Don't hit him don't rub his face it his mess (this can actually cause other unwanted behaviors). Don't give him free roam of the house, that is something he needs to earn. Invest in a dog/child gate, keep him in the kitchen or other non-carpeted areas. Invest in cleaning agents that remove the smell when he does have an accident.

He won't be perfect overnight, but if you use watching and confining tecniques you should have him 100% potty trained in a few weeks. PM me if you want some specific tips.

I agree with skycat. Keep him in a crate and as soon as you let him out, take him out for a "walk" so he can do his business. Get him conditioned and soon enough he will feel it is better to pee outside than on your carpets. Lots of walks help, too.:)

Its very common for males to mark in new places. Especially if you have had other animals there. Athough, it most certainly should be reprimanded with a strong No when you catch him, followed by taking him outside.
I would still recommend neutering him soon though, to prevent possible dominance issues, and to prevent certain health problems. A year of age is not actully too late for neutering. It basically means he has all of the proper male hormones, and he is going to look more "like a boy". We usually don't neuter male dogs until atleast 11 months of age for that reason. Different vets have different opinions on the matter.
Keep in mind if he has been at a shelter, he was allowed to pee where ever, so proper house training should fix him of this in no time.
Congrats on the new beagle, they are a great dog, however, you may want to get him microchipped (if he isnt already) and have extra id on his collar..they love to run!!!

beagles are cool! we had one when i was growning up (sorry, she was female so i can't help with the territory marking stuff), but i can vouch for the running. we lived out in the sticks and once in awhile she would catch a scent and take off. i remember one time she was gone for 3 days, but we could hear her most of the time baying her foolish head off in the woods. she came home on her own, dehydrated, starved, scratched up, but otherwise fine. they can't seem to help themselves.

Took me two weeks to house train my GS
it didn't take physical punishment just a sharp NO
and took her outside and
lots and lots of praise when she went outside to pee
the biggest problem was getting her to stop playing with the cat
the cat almost left home
she treat the cat just like a puppy and insisted on cleaning him top to toe whenever he came in the house :)she still does the cat is just resigned to the fact
that he is going to get a good licking
whenever he comes home :)

I totally agree.... you will do so much more harm that good by smacking the poor guy. He will resent you and not trust you. The bet thing you can do it yell at him, "NO!" and show him, but not rub his nose in it. You have to catch him doing it, or else he won't know what he did wrong. NEVER EVER EVER hit your dog. That is the WORST thing you can do.

Thank you all for the great advice.

The rascal is doing much better today as I think he is more comfortable with his surroundings. He won't let me out of his sight and he and I both collasped with exhaustion last night. I had bought him a bed, layed by him and woke up by him this morning LOL.

Congrats on the new pup. We got Margurita when she was 2 and housebroken. She still had a few accidents the first couple of weeks. Now she is just spoiled. She sleeps with my daughter even though she has a bed, has free run of the house and even has her own stocking at Christmas. Give him some time to adjust and he'll do just fine.
