What's your most embarrassing moment in freefall?

Recommended Posts

Let's bring a little skydiving to this forum...

I was on a four way w/ Andyman, Mountainman and his wife Laura. After launching the 4 way, and being a newbie, I was so emersed on how cool this was that I never let go of Andyman's chest strap w/ my right hand to grab his forearm. After a couple of jerks, Andyman free'd my hand from the chest strap for proper placement on his arm gripper. We flew the donut for several thousand feet and now it was time to dock on the person to your lefts leg. Because the donut was mis proportioned (Laura and me on one side and MM and AM on the other) MM and AM quickly sunk like rocks in a pond while Laura and I were left floating.

I don't know why I did this but instead of chasing the base I almost took Laura out w/ a power dock:S. She was fine and the rest of the dive was uneventful but I felt pretty dumb when I got down though. After that I realized I should stick to freeflying:D;)

my most embarrasing would have to be my AFF graduation jump, my JM rob didnt really explain to me how i should do the diving exit INTO the wind, so i just sort of dove straight down into what im told was a perfect head down position:$, then i arched out onto my back then realized that i had to flip back over (my JM said it looked like i was in slow motion because i was moving so slowly:S)

by then i completely forgot what the hell else i had to do on the jump so i just did two 360s and a backflip then he pointed left and we both tracked to 6k
my JM rob told me it was the most freeflying hes ever done on an AFP jump:S

when I was in skydiving school, level 1, I went to grab the plastic handle to deploy and it was stuck, so I pulled harder, and looked to see the instructor's altimeter in my hand!:D

needless to say, I had to bribe him so I would pass.

cost me a beer

the funny thing is, is that I didn't drop the altimeter!

well this is any easy one for me.

it was the weekend we had colon berry up. me jonny, vern, tom went up for a suitless jump. well, i had on these shorts with elastic band on them (you'll see why i say this). and the point of this dive was to go and see if we could hold a 4 way flower for a base for something a bit bigger, needless to say, it didn't work. so we broke, and me and vern went to sit, and faced off, well jonny 'bout lost his sunglasses, so he was gone, and i'm not sure where tom was, maybe behind me. but anyway, my shirt was beating hell out of my back, so i reached back to pull it down some (remember, i'm in a sit here), and i fliped with my feet up, well when that happened, the bottom of my shorts inflated. now i had them under my leg straps, but they still about came off. this happened with vern right infront of me, with video. it's was quite funny watching. but, when i fliped up, i kinda turned a bit, so you don't see my ass :P

if your ever around richmond, ask to see the jonny's freefly weekend video if ya really want to see it.

I did something similar! My first AFF jump I reached back to pull and stuck my thumb in my JM's altimeter loop and then couldn't get it back out. He had to pull my thumb out and put my hand on my handle.

Well, at the Harvest Moon boogie I jumed with Quatoraze, Ganja, and one other guy i can't remember. 4 way free flown exit. Bacically I said I'm the new guy, come catch me, and out I went. Well, I guess I was still a floater on that jump. I watched Ganja coming at me, then right on by me. Try as I might, he just kept going and I couldn't keep up!

I made it up later jumping with JimBo (bozo), Treetop, and Cazadora (WFFC "wet t shirt" winner). Jim drug me around the sky playing catch Cazadora, and then I somehow managed to go low. I guess that weekend taught me more about fall rate than any other jumps I had done.

Embarrassing, sure. Fun, Fockin' A!

colon berry is one of the owners, or the owner, of total body flight or something like that in z-hills. freefly instuction, or organizing.

Colon and Pip are the instructors for the Total Body Pilot school. Colon has 8-9,000 jumps now. Most of them head down. He travels the world organizing head down events. . He was kind enough to do video for our T-day 10-way speed team

With a few more instructional jumps, I hope to have him stable and flat. ;)

Embarrising and really cool...

8-way speed star, me diving. Came in hot and high on the 6 way round that had built.
Went over the top of the base and hit the burble and dropped like a rock right throught he center of the formation. (I knew when I hit the burble I wasn't going anywhere but down so I went basically head down and got small to miss everyone)
Kinda like a hula hoop jump with everyone else as the hoop.

Felt a bit embarrased about the F-up and guilty cuz I enjoyed it so much.

Probably the lamest moment for me was AFF 5 or 6, when I was supposed to do a 360. Well I did a 360, and about a half dozen more, spinning like a dope because I didn't know how to stop. I think that may have been the student jump I almost flunked, can't remember now. Don't have enough jumps for anything classic yet, but give me time.

There's such a large selection to choose from :$

It could be the time I was having trouble with my grip because of tension (caused by my dropped knees), so I bit the guy's baggy jumpsuit leg to readjust. He told me when he got down it wasn't all jumpsuit I got.

Then there's the time I was first through the hoop on a women's hoop dive; my instructions were to go well below and lay a really fast base. No one ever caught me; I was smokin'.

Fortunately, most of my major gaffes were before video was common, so they live only my my quickly failing memory :P

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

I did almost the exact same thing a little while back, on a SCR dive. I went straight through the middle. To say the least, I was very very embarressed.

I had something like 50 jumps. Lew Sanborn saw me all geared up and with nothing to do, and invited me on an 8-way. I was surprised that he, along with many of the more experienced jumpers on the DZ, wanted me on their jump. Bunch of firsts there: First 8-way, first time wearing lead, first time floating on anything bigger than a two way. I had been having trouble moving around before because I was using a jumpsuit that was to big for me, so I was working as hard as I could to keep up with the formation and didn't have much left to move. With the lead, it was almost too easy to move. I kept over-shooting and orbiting the formation. Finally I got lined up on my slot and starting driving in. It was perfect, except I was going a little too fast. When I tried to slow down, I went low but didn't lose any horizontal speed. The harder I tried, the lower I went. Right under the formation. It funelled, I was embarrased.
