I was about 6 ft up, crosswind gust came and sent me shootin off to the side. hit the ground running, till I caught a ridge in the dirt. got about another 2 seconds of air time. then face first into the dirt. pissed me off, got dirt all over the new jumpsuit!!!! but still well worth it <<<>>> A good friend will bail you outta jail... I like the suit and all, but the thing that would really get me would be the money I shelled out to get it. I don't think I ever wished I got paid in American dollars more than I did then....or a whole bunch more Canadian dollars anyways. Every time i see someone flare un-evenly, then reach for the ground with their hand and leg, making the canopy turn to the wrong direction to fix the un-even flare (exact opposite response needed to keep canopy over their head for a good landing), they blame a sudden side gust. I challenge anyone to stand out in the landing area and see how many "sudden side gusts" they feel, strong enough to move a canopy. Sorry but I put sudden side gusts, line dump, canopies have naturally turning downwind tendancies and the lock ness monster all in the same catagory. Push 0 #13 February 10, 2003 Could be mechanical turbulence if it was windy. One time (no shit there I was...) I was maybe 30 feet of the ground, and the DZ has the huge barn thing near the landing area. Well, the wind was coming right from it, and I pointed my newbie *ss right at the barn. Felt like a broken elevator. I almost left a brown stain on the jumpsuit -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. Checked penetration etc down between my feet and everything was spot on holding in a straight line no crabbing. About 50 ft up I'm looking down and I start going sideways to the right. Then the canopy starts to turn that way and accelerate. Flat turn is an option but I thought I was too low so PLF'd instead. I got up cursing and the first thing I did was check the wind sock and it hadn't changed. Karma for buying a white jumpsuit, perhaps? Poor lil thing! I can relate to that. I dont personally have my own jumpsuit, but my last tandem in my TAF course I was wearing my brand new cargo's and it was raining all morning. Cleared up by lunch. We came into landing fairly hard, and we went sliding on my side....got mud all up the side of me. fool 0 #21 February 10, 2003 I had an experience sort of liek that...I was heading towards the dz from a relatively long spot, and only had one sock to use as a reference for wind, so I landed that way. Turns out, the frigging thing had somehow wrapped itself around the pole, and appeared to be pointing 180 degrees from what the wind was actually doing...no big deal, I landed fine, just a little fast. Ok, that wasn't really similar at all... That severe of turbulence will generally fold in an end-cell. Usually turbulance causes a canopy to drop, sometimes climb, or slow it's descent. How many high speed canopy pilots do you see crash and burn because a gust blows their canopy over? How many tandems suddenly turn at low altitude and land crosswind from a sudden gust? Why don't experienced/excellent canopy pilots complain about sudden side gusts? I really am not trying to harsh on you, just trying to stop people from blaming side gusts for landing issues.
