skycat 0 #27 February 10, 2003 Quotesee thats the thing I was coming in slow, I only have 20 jumps, not quite swooping yet!!! It's amazing how people don't notice what they do on landing. We have hours of landing footage where they are flaring un-evenly, reaching with their foot for the ground or just plain and simple doing the oddest things, such as letting one arm up in the middle of their flare. The thing is they had no idea they were doing it until they saw the video. They said the same thing, it was a crosswind, turbulence, termals, an act of god. Yet the video showed clear as day what they did. 20 jumps doesn't have much to do with it other than the fact that you are going to improve and as you brain learns to instintively correct for things like turbulance you won't even know the wind was trying to turn you. I never noticed how much I correct without knowing until I saw strait on video of me landing on a bumpy day, I didn't think it was all that bumpy but damn were my hands going back and forth making small corrections (kind of like we do in the car).Fly it like you stole it! kiltboy 0 #28 February 10, 2003 I didn't take it as harsh. My experience wasn't a sudden side gust as such in that it wasn't a violent change. Also it wasn't the heavy trubulence that you describe that can result in cell closures or a bumpy ride (I've had the bumpy ride). A bit more detail is that I fly a PD190 with a loading a little under 1:1 and I was getting no penetration as it was windy. It was a drift that quickly developed into landing crosswind and not into the wind as I had originally set up. It also happened at an altitude which never left time (for me at least) to safely correct. On a lighter note. I've landed on my toes only to be picked up again by the wind. Last time I planted my feet and buried the toggle trying to collapse the canopy. However, it was winter and there was ice on the ground so I was off skiing for 20 feet along the ice. slim 0 #29 February 10, 2003 thats true, maybe I smoked too much crack, or my dumb ass just f'ed it up! I am glad you all pointed that out, because that puts the responsibility on me so therefore I can work harder on paying more attention to my landings, instead of passing it off as fluke weather. <<<>>> A good friend will bail you outta jail... suz 0 #30 February 10, 2003 Dont worry slim, if it makes you feel better, I went crashing into trees on my first solo. I think I even have the pic to prove it, if you can see the bright white and green in the trees, that's me. Why so difficult to see the canopy????? I was 200 metres from target. At least you have a jumpsuit. that's pretty good, and you only have 20 jumps. I dont think I'll be able to afford any gear for quite some time. It's going to be a stuggle to finish my TAF course! Don't bother me, I'm living happily ever after

Just get video next time and post it so we really can point and laugh. Sebazz1 2 #33 February 10, 2003 Slim, you should cut off your dive loops from your front risers. They cause turns low to the ground. If you remove them you will never ever do anything stupid under canopy ever again. Just my .02...

numbknuckle 0 #39 February 11, 2003 One of the many times I gargled dirt, The DZO was watching and had choice words for me. He's all " You almost broke your femer and you arm reaching for the ground like that. You pointed your leg at the ground and then pointed your hand which only turns you harder. You gotta think like a pilot of a plane, and fly your canopy all the way in, no mistakes. Look straight ahead, not down, and make adjustments. If you point at the ground, thats where you'll go, and thats what you'll break. Fly it in like a pilot flys a plane." Thats been some of the best advice I've had. I SO don't want a broken bone, much less a femer. Pain SUUUUUUCKS! Fly it like a plane. I ate it last week too, though. My slow ass legs betrayed me... or my short late flair... I down sized... or was it my...
