I'll always know who to blame for a packing-error, and I don't have to pay for a packer, jumping is expensive enough already... I think packing is an important skill, but I think its also accepting responsibility for your opening and canopy. I don't want that for my reserve, so I leave that responsibility to someone else ie my rigger. Occasionally I'll let someone else pack for me, but its rare, ie if I'm manifesting or jumping back to back (or close) loads with 2 rigs. Right now, it takes me so long that a day where I could make 6 jumps turns into a day where I make 2. Because I take so few days away from my family to go jumping, I want to make them all count. GA has very high humidity and the canopy sticks to me so I bitch about it, but I do it. I'l pay a packer if I'm doing back to backs or have to debrief. Second, as to getting stuck hanging with the RW jumpers. I really don't understand that mentality. Why can't everyone just all hang out together? Why does it need to be a them against us thing? I really just don't get it and I guess I never will. The considerations are (1) packing sucks (2) if you don't pack, you do not inspect your canopy enough and you may not know how to pack when you need to. I work all week. On the weekend, I want to relax, jump, socialize with friends. Therefore, I hire a packer. However, once a month, I take home my canopy unpacked. Then, the following day when I am rested, I spend a lot of time looking at my lines, velcro, bag, grommets, slider... Then, I pack it. If you go to a big boogie, there may not be enough packers. Guest #35 January 29, 2003 I think you should know how, just for knowledge's sake itself, if nothing else. I can do my own packing, but I'm so slow and meticulous that I drive everybody crazy. Which is why I don't pack at boogies. At the same time, I wouldn't go with someone I wasn't familiar with, though I'll make an exception if said packer shows the usual wear and tear (e.g., packer's knee). In the absence of other cues, I'll observe the packer in action. If they know their business and are effecient, that's good enough for me. Of course, with people like Packin' Kathy, the reputation speaks for itself. I can appreciate this as I'm sure that your packer does. I pay $15 a jump and typically make 6-9 jumps aday on good weekends so that adds up quick. I do get a couple of pack jobs a weekend just for a break and bonding for when I NEED a packer (time,dirt dive,etc.). Sometimes packing for me is quiet time to go over what went on during the dive. However my packer has packed it 3 days a week in that time and i get lovely, consistant openings, and can make quick calls too! so i always take care of my packer she takes care of me. why would i want to add my less skillful packing skills into the equation if i dont have too?? i do plan to start packing for my self here at Kapowsin, and i'm know i'll grab someone to help me the first few times again..(where the loads dont run quite so fast and furious as Eloy in fact i'll probably pack my main for the first time this year on Sat. There are people that argue anyone that drives a car should be able to change their own oil, but I don't agree with that. You have what you do for work, and skydiving is your time off to relax. Personally, I pack very slow and it causes me much grief. I can afford to pay someone else to pack, but I don't. Why? Because I like packing. I like understanding the opening characteristics of the canopy, I like changing something a little different and seeing how that affects the opening. I like inspecting my gear after every jump. If something goes wrong, there's only one person to blame. I feel like it makes me understand the sport and the equipment a tiny bit better.
