VivaHeadDown 0 #27 January 29, 2003 Mike, you are a spoiled slack-ass. And I only say that because I know you. So what do you expect? Oh yeah, and about getting stuck with the RW'rs, HAHA. You should have come out eating, it had to have been more fun. Don't Confuse Me With My Own Words
IronMike 0 #28 January 29, 2003 QuoteOh yeah, and about getting stuck with the RW'rs, HAHA. You should have come out eating, it had to have been more fun. I ALWAYS hang out and go eat with the FFers. I wanted something different. We went to Brett's house and I got to sit in a hot tub with girls I have never met before or, more importantly, that havent met me. It wasnt too bad at all. mccordia 74 #29 January 29, 2003 Although I won't judge anyone who doesn't pack his own chute, I think it's just handy (and more economical) to pack for yourself. I'll always know who to blame for a packing-error, and I don't have to pay for a packer, jumping is expensive enough already... Having someone else do your packing costs you 1 jump on every for jumps you make....that's just money I'd rather spend jumping...JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete? Jasmin 0 #30 January 29, 2003 Quote wrong?I am afriad to let others pack my rig. My mal the other week (incidents) wasn't packed by me: I might have done the same but I've not packed a reserve ride yet... Quote Ive seen those movies where someone gets mad at me for talking to some hot blonde chick and they cut my lines! Don't laugh this happened to a girl in Germany. He re-routed her cypress, cut her pin and then packed her a mal. Words cannot express the disgust I have for that individual.... Y'anyways I know how to flat and pro pack. I think packing is an important skill, but I think its also accepting responsibility for your opening and canopy. I don't want that for my reserve, so I leave that responsibility to someone else ie my rigger. Occasionally I'll let someone else pack for me, but its rare, ie if I'm manifesting or jumping back to back (or close) loads with 2 rigs. Each to their own, its a nice luxury at the end of the w/e to get it packed, I'll admit....xj "I wouldn't recommend picking a fight with the earth...but then I wouldn't recommend picking a fight with a car either, and that's having tried both." jfields 0 #32 January 29, 2003 I want to get really self-sufficent at packing, but I haven't been able to get over the hump yet. Right now, it takes me so long that a day where I could make 6 jumps turns into a day where I make 2. Because I take so few days away from my family to go jumping, I want to make them all count. My goal: self-packing by Rantoul.
mouth 0 #33 January 29, 2003 First, I know how to pack and generally pack for myself. That way the responsibility for a problem is mine. GA has very high humidity and the canopy sticks to me so I bitch about it, but I do it. I'l pay a packer if I'm doing back to backs or have to debrief. Second, as to getting stuck hanging with the RW jumpers. I really don't understand that mentality. Why can't everyone just all hang out together? Why does it need to be a them against us thing? I really just don't get it and I guess I never will. All I can say is it is your loss if you segregate yourself based on what type jumping you do. -- Hot Mama At least you know where you stand even if it is in a pile of shit. happythoughts 0 #34 January 29, 2003 My 2 cents... The considerations are (1) packing sucks (2) if you don't pack, you do not inspect your canopy enough and you may not know how to pack when you need to. I work all week. On the weekend, I want to relax, jump, socialize with friends. Therefore, I hire a packer. However, once a month, I take home my canopy unpacked. Then, the following day when I am rested, I spend a lot of time looking at my lines, velcro, bag, grommets, slider... Then, I pack it. If you go to a big boogie, there may not be enough packers. I have been to big-way (RW) events where half the people had to pack in order to meet the next load.
Guest #35 January 29, 2003 I think you should know how, just for knowledge's sake itself, if nothing else. I can do my own packing, but I'm so slow and meticulous that I drive everybody crazy. Which is why I don't pack at boogies. At the same time, I wouldn't go with someone I wasn't familiar with, though I'll make an exception if said packer shows the usual wear and tear (e.g., packer's knee). In the absence of other cues, I'll observe the packer in action. If they know their business and are effecient, that's good enough for me. Of course, with people like Packin' Kathy, the reputation speaks for itself. I'll always fork over that extra buck, because she runs a tight ship."The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat."

I can appreciate this as I'm sure that your packer does. I pay $15 a jump and typically make 6-9 jumps aday on good weekends so that adds up quick. I do get a couple of pack jobs a weekend just for a break and bonding for when I NEED a packer (time, dirt dive,etc.). Sometimes packing for me is quiet time to go over what went on during the dive. A little personal debriefing!ps; we have air conditioned packing on the lower and upper levels!

Zenister 0 #40 January 29, 2003 Quote As long as you _can_ do it, and inspect your rig, canopy, lines and risers regularly, there's nothing wrong with getting someone else to pack for you. (You DO inspect your canopy, lines and risers even though you don't pack it, right?) absolutely! in fact i set my brakes, shake it out and open my slider and cock the pc everytime, but i have to say having a packer rocks!! Quote IronMike -Although I won't judge anyone who doesn't pack his own chute, I think it's just handy (and more economical) to pack for yourself. perhaps, but my time is more valuable than my money..i can devote my time and energy to the jump and so make more jumps per day when paying a packer (my personal record is 9) than by packing myself. also i see at it as a currency issue too, i havent personally packed my main in 5 months..but was jumping every weekend up until recently. However my packer has packed it 3 days a week in that time and i get lovely, consistant openings, and can make quick calls too! so i always take care of my packer she takes care of me. why would i want to add my less skillful packing skills into the equation if i dont have too?? i do plan to start packing for my self here at Kapowsin, and i'm know i'll grab someone to help me the first few times again..(where the loads dont run quite so fast and furious as Eloy in fact i'll probably pack my main for the first time this year on Sat. Has everyone paid their case for their first pack job of the year? by honest. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. riddler 0 #41 January 29, 2003 Nothing wrong with paying someone else, in my book. There are people that argue anyone that drives a car should be able to change their own oil, but I don't agree with that. You have what you do for work, and skydiving is your time off to relax. Personally, I pack very slow and it causes me much grief. I can afford to pay someone else to pack, but I don't. Why? Because I like packing. I like understanding the opening characteristics of the canopy, I like changing something a little different and seeing how that affects the opening. I like inspecting my gear after every jump. If something goes wrong, there's only one person to blame. I feel like it makes me understand the sport and the equipment a tiny bit better. Of course, I've only packed about 100 times I might not feel the same after a few thousand pack jobs. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
