PLFXpert 0 #1 January 15, 2003 I just came from the store and Lay's potato chips were buy one, get one free, so of course I got a couple bags, which promts my question: Why do they make potato chip bags so big if the chips only fill the bottom 1/4 of the bag? I mean couldn't we save on plastic or something? No wonder it's buy one, get one free, b/c you have to buy 4 bags just to fill ONE up.Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back. Like cereal boxes or anything else that resembles that. eat pringles if you are concerned with the wasted plastic. or those crazy triangle torengo things that are near impossible to get out of the fricken can. grrr. dterrick 0 #11 January 15, 2003 I disagree Kev. Butter flavored pretzels rule! Someone on DZ brought them to the party and I couldn't BELILEVE you could get the best of buttered popcorn and salty pretzels in one package. Who the hell thinks up this stuff?!?!? Actually, since you asked, they do a lot of consumer research to prove that there is great satisfaction in eating a chip that is still in one piece. The bags are filled with air to protect them from breaking. This is Pringle's whole corner of the market, and why they spend a ton more on their can packaging than it would cost to package the same amount of product in a bag. The aluminum pull-off seal at the top costs more than all the chips in the can. And consumers complain when lots of chips are broken. There are lower standards for regular chips in bags, and there is a balance between expectations for chips breaking compared to the extra packaging volume used to prevent crumbled chips. Think about it, if the bag was packed with chips, they would all end up broken...
