jceman 1 #9 January 15, 2003 Avgas and a container of LOX will start a bonfire really quickly. Just ask Ralphie at Palatka. I believe his facial hair grew back in time... Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, more money. Why do they call it "Tourist Season" if we can't shoot them?

miked10270 0 #14 January 15, 2003 Hmmm... Choices, choices... Avgas is good for the initial flare, but Avtur or, better yet, diesel is beter for staying power. Mix in a little vaseline for... (whoops, forgot this thread is about fires, not ducks. Personally I'd recommend blast incendiary as the way to go, but if I was Freeflyz, I'd just open my mouth and let the hot air do the job.... ozthebum 0 #22 January 15, 2003 QuoteThere's this crazy American dude who lights fires with liquid oxygen. Boy does that go up well. I read about this dude at a college (MIT maybe), who wanted to see how fast he could get a BBQ from not lit to ready to cook. Tried it with liquid ox and it completely destroyed the cheap BBQ grill. All they had left was a pile of smoldering ashes. I'll see if I can find the story...pretty funny stuff. dterrick 0 #23 January 15, 2003 Jet A. Why, you say? Geez... allow me to demonstrate my chemical ignorance... Jet A is basically Kerosene, right? Kerosene (an "oil") burns slow and the volatile compounds do not evaporate in a flash (pun intended). 100LL is highly volatile and all the 'good stuff' boils off in ambient temperateure. Soak the wood and 100 LL will not KA-BOOM just minutes later. Most ofthe explosive power has already evaporated. Jet A will burn 'forever' by contrast and fuel the fire into a raging frenzy. Worse yet is C-12 Racing Fuel designed for 12:1 compression racing engines. We built a bonfire of dead picnic tables one Canada day at the track and blew nearly 5 gallons of the stuff. ...wouldn;t even keep the tables alight. Another 2 gallons of pump fuel, however, made quite a nice kaboom. Now, take some diesel fuel (crude Jet A) and some nitrogen fertilizer ... and soon you have Oklahoma but I'm sure we don't want to go there. Bastards! Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
