Where should I look?

Recommended Posts

Ok...I just found out that my job will be eliminated sometime this year. No definite time has been set. They are still working out the "details."

So, I was thinking about the places to move and just threw up a little list.

If you were the one who had the opportunity to move or stay where you live, where would you go and why?

There are plenty of options. Texas has pretty cheap housing and cost of living, and in the middle of the state there's enough scenery and features in the road to make a motorcycle fun (I have one in Houston, and you can pretty much point it in a direction and start going). Good weather a LOT of the year, too. Plenty of high tech, again especially in the middle of the state (around Austin).

But there are lots of rednecks here, unless you're careful about where you live. That's either a downside or an upside, depending on what you want :|

Follow the real-estate. Right now, the hot real-estate market is Tuscon/Pheonix. Where there's good real-estate, there's good jobs.

And a little thing called - ELOY! :)
San Diego would be my other choice, but housing prices are already pretty high there. You will get more capital gains out of a house in southern Arizona.

Florida's ok if you like to be hot and sweaty most of the year. If I had the choice, I'd move to North Carolina.

ol - Why would I rarely get to jump? DZ's not open?

That's the rainy season, same with Washington.

As for earthquakes here in the Bay area, the last major one was in 89. I do live about 10 miles from an active fault line that produces a half a dozen or so tremblors a year. Nothing big, the windows rattle, the cat claws you,you sit up in the chair.

You forgot to put California on your list.

DID she?!

Actually, I was being lazy as I didn't want to type all 50 states and didn't put them in any kind of order. :D

You definately want to avoid California. Especially Northern Cal. This state is a breeding ground for liberals, hippies, gays, etc... And yes we will force feed our ideals down your throat. So definately avoid Cali...B|

Thank you...

Ooops just saw a mother breast feeding better go picket her...;)

CALIFORNIA B|

I have some emotional reasons as well as good business sense reasons:

Emotional reasons:
1. Year-round skydiving
2. Great Weather
3. Sunshine
4. Great Weather
5. Sunshine

If you require a brief respite from sun in the winter, then may I suggest Northern California. If you don't mind a fast pace, then Souther California has your ticket. You win either way.

Good business sense reasons:
1. Strong economy (top five in the world)
2. Excellent infrastructure
3. The overall good weather attracts people and businesses alike
4. Development is continuous
5. Cost of living aside, everything else costs the same (pack of gum, bag of chips, pound of fruit)

I have lived and/or stayed extensively or am thoroughly familiar in many of the places you're considering: Florida (lived), Oregon (lived), Washington (worked/familiar), Texas (worked/familiar DFW area only), I never lived in Wisconsin, but I was next door in Minnesota years ago ;). All are fine places to live IMO. Arizona seems neat, but if you're from the great white north, you will have trouble adjusting to the climate (seriously). If I had to prioritize (and I have in the past), I'd look:

1. CA
2. TX
3. WA
4. OR
5. AZ
6. FL

You might also consider the Carolinas, and Georgia too if you're considering Florida.

I have moved and lived in many places in a purely civilian capacity, MN, MA, CT, NY, VT, ME, KY, FL, GA, NorCal, OR, SoCal... There's something about California, it gets in your blood...and you just "know"... B|

Edit to add: Plus, I've also met some of the coolest people here! ;)
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!
